There is no perfect solution. It will be either parents showing off their wealth or showing off their children’s ability. With our country becoming developed, the gap between the rich and poor is getting wider. It may come to a point that some of the good primary schools may be privatised and they will choose who they want to admit to the school. This is unavoidable. Just take a look at the secondary schools.

True, but I don’t think the govt will allow privatisation of primary schools. Will be too elitist a pill for nation to swallow. As of now, system is not perfect, but I am happy to live with it as is.

seeing PRs getting into the schools that you want your child to get in, it sure doesn’t feel good. especially, when you are so close to the school. when your child has every right to get in because he or she is a citizen!

Yes, I feel sore all time when I see Cat High boys, PR or not. Just blame it on my luck for not marrying a Cat High boy.

I also felt sore when I met a China PR mama who managed to ballot her boy into Ai Tong at Phase 2C.

Well, what can MOE do? Introduce entrance exams at popular schools? I think that might be fairer.

haha... i dun feel sore if the school is quite far away (maybe about 2km away), coz there is no ground to be sored...

BUT if a school is nearby your place (less than 1km, even less than 500m away), and yet you have to see PR going into that school smiley and yet your child (A CITIZEN) can only see these people go to the school, and he or she has to take school bus (and have to take those nonsense bullying on the bus, and gotta pay for the exobitant sch bus fare coz you can't afford another car), you will be more than sore.

TO the people at the ivory tower: HOW DO YOU FEEL IF YOUR CHILD(REN) HAS(VE) TO GO THROUGH ALL THESE??!!

Never occur to them before? its like asking people to imagine if there is no atmosphere on earth... 😛

Yesterday talk to a admin staff of a normal neighbourhood school. Number of PVs for her school has doubled in this 2 years due to fear of single session (among other reasons).

if one fine day in future - MOE were to change policy & all primary schools or MOE were to set common entrance proficiency tests for kids due for P1 registration, many things can happen to hot, popular schools in demand:-

                      i) not important anymore (by association), if you were :-
                      - once a former ex old alumni boy / ex girl, or
                      - Hokkien Huay Kuan clan member, or
                      - teaching staff member, or school management committe member, or
                      - grassroot leader, or
                      - Parent volunteer, or
                      - belong to methodist church, catholic church, any religious group, or
                      - you've another sibling currently studying in the same school.

because under this scenario - phases 2A, 2B, 2C, 2C supp all fail to apply, become void.

ii) not important anymore (by distance), whether:-
you stay <500 m directly opposite school gate entrance (a stone throw away), < 1km or > 2km from hot school.

because can or cannot enter the popular school now depends - entirely on your child alone. Everybody go back to square one - begin with your child.

iii) children from disadvantaged low income families and children with learning difficulty will be affected greatly (example: dyslexic, autistic, speech delay kids, other development delay kids, etc), unless the child is very bright naturally.

iv) pre-school enrichment centres / business will mushroom everywhere.
Branded, famous kindergarten will have very long waiting queues even while mothers are in confinement ward in hospital waiting to give birth, kindergarten school fees will soar high like sky scrapper ?

qn - is this what you wish SG to turn into, witness in future - for your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren ?

better not. I can imagine, from exam, then they will have entrance interview. Piang…haven’t reach P5 already got to do portfolio and cv (whatchamacalit).
