Opinions of the Primary School Registration System
-
if one fine day in future - MOE were to change policy & all primary schools or MOE were to set common entrance proficiency tests for kids due for P1 registration, many things can happen to hot, popular schools in demand:-
i) not important anymore (by association), if you were :-
- once a former ex old alumni boy / ex girl, or
- Hokkien Huay Kuan clan member, or
- teaching staff member, or school management committe member, or
- grassroot leader, or
- Parent volunteer, or
- belong to methodist church, catholic church, any religious group, or
- you've another sibling currently studying in the same school.
because under this scenario - phases 2A, 2B, 2C, 2C supp all fail to apply, become void.
ii) not important anymore (by distance), whether:-
you stay <500 m directly opposite school gate entrance (a stone throw away), < 1km or > 2km from hot school.
because can or cannot enter the popular school now depends - entirely on your child alone. Everybody go back to square one - begin with your child.
iii) children from disadvantaged low income families and children with learning difficulty will be affected greatly (example: dyslexic, autistic, speech delay kids, other development delay kids, etc), unless the child is very bright naturally.
iv) pre-school enrichment centres / business will mushroom everywhere.
Branded, famous kindergarten will have very long waiting queues even while mothers are in confinement ward in hospital waiting to give birth, kindergarten school fees will soar high like sky scrapper ?
qn - is this what you wish SG to turn into, witness in future - for your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren ? -
better not. I can imagine, from exam, then they will have entrance interview. Piang…haven’t reach P5 already got to do portfolio and cv (whatchamacalit).

moe can amend the the school registration system but i definitely think that kindergartens and primary schools in singapore should not be allowed to set school entrance examinations.
i dont want to have to reserve a place for my baby at a preschool (popular, branded or neighbourhood) when i am only 2 weeks pregnant and yet is on waiting list.
i dont want to force my child to attend numerous enrichment classes so as to have a beautiful and shiny report / cv to show to the kindergartens and primary school upon registration.
i dont wish to be exploited by all the enrichment centres promising and promoting all the wonders of attending their classes at super ridiculous price.
i dont wish for my child / grandchildren to lose their childhood. -
I still believe that PRs and foreigners should NOT be in any phase AT ALL. they should be the LAST to register. after all, we are taking about GOVERMENT PUBLIC SCHOOLS. dun you think your citizen children have the right to go to the school nearby? why is it that a PR or foreigner can get in and your child (A CITIZEN) cannot? you mean your child belongs to lower class citizen???
yes, a PR or foreigner may contribute to economy (they also benefit a lot ok?, not as if they work for free, and they also snatch jobs and earn much more than when they are in their own countries), but do you think that they should be at the equal status as your CITIZEN children???
think about it. -
I HOPE SOMEBODY FROM THE IVORY TOWER IS READING THIS.
-
i greatly agree with smurf, and support her that - Managment sitting at the Ivory tower should look into this urgently ! don't just read & do nothing - esp. when you're in authority & in power to help & give top highest priority back to our own fellow Singapore citizens first.
-
how many pp in the ivory tower go thru the pain and worry we common folks experienced in the primary school registration?
using one chicken foot to count is more than enough?

The mention of entrance interview reminds me of the recent message exchange between myself and my ex colleague who is a hongkonger from hongkong. She has went back to hongkong after being retrenched and being paid handsomely, she moved back to hongkong with her family of 2 kids and a hubby. Anyway she told me that she wants to enroll her elder girl into her old primary school which is a private and branded school (something like Nanyang primary or catholic high kind of branded school).but she has to enroll her girl into the kindergarten affilated to the primary school. every year there are so many applicants to the kindergarten that the principal will do an entrance interview with the parent and kid for the kindergarten enrollment first then entrance interview for the primary(priority for interview given to those attending the kindergarten). My fren has to prepare her girl for all questions with her girl for the kindergarten enrollment in english, cantonese and mandarin. i was like huh? for kindergarten?? Anyway to ensure higher chance for the entrance interview for the primary, she sent her her girl for ballet, swimming, harp lessons, english, maths, chinese , summer camp etc you name it she has it and her girl finally went through the entrance interview and got in the prestige primary school. by the way no such thing as priority for the younger sibling so her second child her son went through the same route again
