All About Delayed Speech

I was like you mothers worry and worry. My girl also didn’t speak any sentence when she was already 3 plus.


She saw KK OT and ST. Check ear no problem. Was there a year plus. After that, she improves by speaking abit of sentences.

Please do not waste money on Kumon or any enrichment classes when your child can’t speak yet. He or she will feel left out and will have low self esteem.

After the one year with KK, everything check except eye sight. It’s only after K1 the MOH came to PCF to check their eye sight. My girl was given a letter to have further check in the Geylang East Polyclinic and to our shock she has 500 degree on each eye.

Not short-sighted it’s LONG-SIGHTED. Beat it.

I feedback to KK of all things you guys made us spent money to check this and that but not eye-sight. We have wasted lots of money and time.

Now I realised KK do not have the expert people to do OT and ST. Why outside are charging so expensive for OT, there is a reason. They are really trained.

Why I am saying about KK because recently my girl was diagnosed with ‘Sensory Processing Disorder’ straight away. Infact, she has the symptoms when she was 2-3 years old. When she saw the KK OT and ST , she was already 5 years old.

To be fair, kk OT and ST are simply OT and ST. They are not child dev specialists and thus cannot give u diagnosis of SPD.

And eye sight issues are not relevant to speech. It doesn't affect speech unless they are reading. So I agree with their OT and ST for not requesting an eye check. Many children with eye prob learn to speak like normal kids. Even the blind can talk normally. Speech delay is because of other issues.

I don't think it's fair for u to say that they are not properly trained. My ds has been with them for over a yr and he has improved tremendously. Before we started, we couldn't understand what he was saying. He also started talking late. He couldn't write very well too and has since improved.

I think parental involvement is also very important. After each therapy, we will put to practice what we have learnt there everyday. u cannot just attend the therapy and expect miracles just like u cannot just go school and don't do homework.

My son attended a 3hr daily playgroup at 2 yrs old even when he couldn't talk. Only 6 mths after he attended that he started talking. I think being surrounded by language and speech helps. Rather than stay in a sterile environment, I think mixing with other children works a long way. They learn to communicate by watching other children.

Started ds3 on ST. Very ex!! Hopefully it’s really just a delayed speech n nothing more!

On one hand, I don’t want him to ‘miss out’ but on the other hand, dunno whether if it is just money down the drain??

depends on your kid.
if it is only speech delay and your kid can sit and absorb, enrichment can still go on. they may not know how to speak, but they can still listen and absorb.
enrichment alone of course is not enough. you have to follow up at home to ensure that it is money well spent.

Actually I also can't really tell if he's absorbing! Haiz... I'm alsoabit at fault cos didn't really follow up with him a lot!! *really need to manage my time better*

haha...you will know after a while.
i didn't know my boy was absorbing stuff (i was like :skeptical:, when my ds2's then-Chinese language teacher told me of his unusual way of listening in class; i thought she was joking cos the form teacher said he was inattentive :oops: ; even now, he can look like he is not listening, but still know what is going on ) until he hit the 3.5yr mark where his speech progress picked up a lot.
glad that he is just a bit late.

We also didn’t know if he know anything. But once he could talk, he could tell us what those were. Enrichment classes also help him socially and expose him to speech frequently.

my boy is kindof like your boy.
when he hit 3.5yo, can really see the progress. also started reading around 4yo. he is going 5yo end of this month and already flipping through his brother stuff to see what is interesting and he absorbs certain science fact that i teach his brother just by sitting beside us (during my elder's revision) playing. he still does not sit down/still to read the same book for more than 5-10min, but he'll flip the same books repeatedly during the little pockets of time a day/week, so here and there he read a bit abit.
his spoken sentence structure/grammar/vocab is still lacking though. and sometimes (luckily not frequent) he stammers.
