      Hi,

My girl went to Kaleidoscope and Total Communication. The rate per hour depends on the grade of the therapist that you choose. We chose Senior Therapist for kalei ($145) and the director for TC ($180). I think there are other cheaper places. Dynamics =135 if I’m not wrong. Which therapist is good? Each has her own strengths. For kalei, she will give you a handout summarizing things done in class and giving suggestions on how you can carry on the "therapy"'at home. For TC, no handout but I feel she was better in terms of increasing girl’s word output. But sometimes you end a few minutes early. U feel shortchanged.
But overall, both are very professional. They will discharge you when they think you don’t need their service anymore. They will not keep you just to earn more $.

One mother was telling her grandmother that she was worried that her son had not yet grown any teeth at 1.5 years. Her toothless Grandma replied, \"There is nothing to worry about. In all my 85 years on earth, I have never attended a wedding where the bridegroom had no teeth. They'll grow by then.\" :rotflmao: ...

This is super funny and I certainly hope it applies to my boy too when the time comes!

          24hr-mum:
i read from young parents magazine enrichment list, got some centres cater to autistic or adhd or learning disability kids.

when my son cant pronounce many sounds at 2+, i got him assessed by THREE therapists: first at mt alvernia, she said just short tongue. since they cant gv a regular timing, i got a 2nd opinion at leapfrog (pte), the therapist michelle was v good, diagnosed him as speech delay and he did very well after 9 mths therapy. but sometime during this session i went kkh to just get 3rd opinion cos kkh cheaper mah. but i found their diagnosis no good - they just say mild problem but actually more serious than that. so i nvr go kkh for treatment. i stuck to Leapfrog..
          Hi 24hr-mum,

At Leapfrog did you have to be in the speech therapy sessions with your boy? To learn to practice with him at home? Also what is the methodology they use to teach your boy? For eg. are they using the Hanen \"It takes Two\" to play and basically talk to your boy? Or use flash cards to build up vocabulary? Or make him pronounce words by looking at the therapist's lips etc? Or all of the above?

Anyway, I am just wondering is there a difference going to different Speech Therapy centres. There are so many around now including very popular (but hard to get appointment) ones. Like what most agree, it is very :moneyflies: :moneyflies: :moneyflies: so want to choose carefully before commiting.

Also for those 3 times a week, do the therapist allow that? I find nowadays the ST will tell me once a week will do. Also must practice at home. And ST are not \"miracle workers\". Like KK and one ST I know seems more interested to teach the parents than to work with the kids. They ask us to sign up for classes. Here I am thinking there is no more time to waste already that's why seeking treatment for my son and there you are them telling me I must go learn to help my boy.

I think my point is that if they think all parents can learn speech therapy as well and talk to their kids at home, than WHY ON EARTH DO WE NEED THE SPEECH THERAPISTS?

            hi 24hr-mum,

did the professional encourage practise speech therapy with your son everyday at home, or better to practise alternate day ?

use what method best so far ?

            =======================================

            hi DesertWind,

I think ST are eager to train parents - because parents are the ones that spent most time with their child at home (24 x 7).

whereas visit ST number of times are limited. Each session is so expensive, charged by the hour.

I have a friend who purposely took up a course in ST, so that she can train her son everyday, bypassing expensive $ & troublesome transport ferrying his son to and fro for private lesson(s).

              Hi eason magpies

KK did not tell us to go for EIPIC program for Ds. We were told to go for the 3 hour workshop organised in Health Promotion Board. Upon attending the workship which teaches caregivers some strategies to help our child speaks, then they will call us up for a speech therapy appointment.

I wish to add that we always try to get Ds interest before he would speak. For eg he likes ice cream and chocolates, so we will tell him to speak more before we give him these items. The Julia Gabriel teacher told us that when children are happy they do anything…

I was like you mothers worry and worry. My girl also didn’t speak any sentence when she was already 3 plus.

She saw KK OT and ST. Check ear no problem. Was there a year plus. After that, she improves by speaking abit of sentences.

Please do not waste money on Kumon or any enrichment classes when your child can’t speak yet. He or she will feel left out and will have low self esteem.

After the one year with KK, everything check except eye sight. It’s only after K1 the MOH came to PCF to check their eye sight. My girl was given a letter to have further check in the Geylang East Polyclinic and to our shock she has 500 degree on each eye.

                Not short-sighted it’s LONG-SIGHTED. Beat it.

I feedback to KK of all things you guys made us spent money to check this and that but not eye-sight. We have wasted lots of money and time.

Now I realised KK do not have the expert people to do OT and ST. Why outside are charging so expensive for OT, there is a reason. They are really trained.

Why I am saying about KK because recently my girl was diagnosed with ‘Sensory Processing Disorder’ straight away. Infact, she has the symptoms when she was 2-3 years old. When she saw the KK OT and ST , she was already 5 years old.

                They can’t see at all.

To be fair, kk OT and ST are simply OT and ST. They are not child dev specialists and thus cannot give u diagnosis of SPD.

And eye sight issues are not relevant to speech. It doesn't affect speech unless they are reading. So I agree with their OT and ST for not requesting an eye check. Many children with eye prob learn to speak like normal kids. Even the blind can talk normally. Speech delay is because of other issues.

I don't think it's fair for u to say that they are not properly trained. My ds has been with them for over a yr and he has improved tremendously. Before we started, we couldn't understand what he was saying. He also started talking late. He couldn't write very well too and has since improved.

I think parental involvement is also very important. After each therapy, we will put to practice what we have learnt there everyday. u cannot just attend the therapy and expect miracles just like u cannot just go school and don't do homework.

My son attended a 3hr daily playgroup at 2 yrs old even when he couldn't talk. Only 6 mths after he attended that he started talking. I think being surrounded by language and speech helps. Rather than stay in a sterile environment, I think mixing with other children works a long way. They learn to communicate by watching other children.

Do u guys feel that it’s a waste of $$ if I sign up my boy for enrichment classes in conjunction with the ST.

On one hand, I don’t want him to ‘miss out’ but on the other hand, dunno whether if it is just money down the drain??

                        depends on your kid.
if it is only speech delay and your kid can sit and absorb, enrichment can still go on. they may not know how to speak, but they can still listen and absorb.
enrichment alone of course is not enough. you have to follow up at home to ensure that it is money well spent.
