I enrolled my dd there when she was K1. She enjoyed it but I pulled her out after a semester/term as I thot that the class was too large and attention was not there as there appeared to be students with varying degrees of capability, so the teacher had to spend time with each student. I'm not sure if it helped her as she was there for only a short while. However, my friend's nephew went to a branch (I don't know which one, but its in the central area) and benefited from it. He's a slow reader.

In the end, my niece helped my dd with her reading for 2 months and from there, her reading skills improved tremendously.

              Hi all

I am hoping to gather some feedbacks from parents who send their kids to I Can Read System.

My K1 daughter is now in I Can Read Level (with short and long vowels and blendings eg \"ir\", \"oo\" etc). She has been with I Can Read from their TCS and PRP level and now promoted to ICR level. I was shocked when i first saw the workbooks coz the passages/words can be very \"chim\" for a pre-schooler to understand. For example, there was this passage with the word \"wedding\" in it and the compreshension question was to ask whats the meaning of wedding. Though I Can Read is a popular and established in singapore, i cant help but to wonder if this system really work for my daughter. Frankly speaking, i really dread doing the I Can Read homework with my daughter coz the passages are really long and the words are really \"high level\" most of the times. My daughter can blend the sound of the words using the code table (for words that are long) with some help. But i thought reading comes with comprehension too?

Am i the only one facing this problem? A parent was telling me that i would be surprised at the end of the day how amazing my daughter would be able to read... somehow i still cant picture that...

              Appreciate advises... thanks.. 😞

My personal view is that without exposure, there’ll never be learning. Do we expect our kids to automatically know what’s a wedding? I’m sure along the way, there’s some explanation we have to do, isn’t it?

I think the beauty of reading is the exposure to different things. As parents, we should be explaining the meaning of the words or the passage.

Don’t dread doing homework with your kid. They can sense it!
Look on the bright side: Your child will have more general knowledge through all the reading!

                        Hi Donkey

I was interested to read your post. I am also thinking of enroling my 10yo in ICR Buit Timah. My fren says her duaghter did well there in the reading programme but not so good in the exam skills lesson.
I shop around quite a lot and found LCentral. It is the same as Literacy Circle they just rebrand this year only. Someone told me their Eng exam skills programme better than ICR and I notice they open up in Bukit Timah plaza already. New centre, can it be good? I guess all the centre standard the same but I think I want to take my child for assessment there before I commit to ICR.

Plz tell me if u enrol in ICR and what you think. Do they do hol programmes? I think Lcentral does maybe this a good way to find out if centre any good.

                        C 😎
