[Fun Poll] How satisfied are u with ur child(ren) results?
-
24hr-mum:
i find my girl v poor thing. work so hard still cant get abv 85....
I think she is in P3.My son also in P3.I also wonder only my son or other kids also like that.I think they will iimprove from P4 onwards.Maths he lose a lot of marks due to carelessness. But this time he improved.MT we need to work hard.So I can't blame him.
This time I asked two of his friends' marks. One boy SA1 he got 98 this time 88 for Maths. He improved Science by 20 marks, but English otherway around.Another boy dropped 20 marks for Sci.
My son previously didn't worry about marks.Today he said his classmate(High IQ like GEP) always got 99,98.Why I can't take like that.I said u cannot compare u with him.You analyse how u can improve ur marks. He felt a little sad about his marks.I am happy. Some more he started to competitive with his friend. It is a good sign to improve his studies.Last two years he just hate to practise. After CA2, I just make him to study in the study time.Sometimes he asked after playing I will study.I didn't allow him.
This time I bet with him for Maths. If u take above 85 I will buy for u anything otherwise you would listen whatever I would say.I win.So he should listen to me. -
Thanks mowmow!
I think last last two years I didn’t reward him as a punishment for his careless mistakes in Maths. But he is not happy. So this time I will buy for him for his hard work and to do more hard work in following year.I bought LEGO for his b’days only. -

Hi cinman!
actually, if your son is interested in Lego, you can introduced him to the next step, Lego Mindstorm NXT. This is where you build a robot, or a car or any contraption with motors and sensors and program it to move according to your design. It teaches the kids the fundamentals of software programming in an easy to learn graphical manner. Children will find it much more satisfying to build a contraption that moves and respond to your commands.cimman:

I would feed DS Lego addiction if he develops one. It is better then Bey Blades or electronic games. DS will try out each model according to the manual, then dismantle and mix and match to build his own creation. So we basically have a whole box of all the Legos and a folder of all the manuals.
If your child is not into programming robots, you can also introduce him to Lego Technics. The Lego Technics range of toys are realistic models based on actual real life vehicles (cars, trucks, construction vehicles, etc..). The advantage of a realistic model is that you get to learn about the mechanics of how gears interacts and how it translate motion from one plane to another.
There are also pneumatic parts in the Technics range. Compressed air is used in pneumatic cylinders to drive pistons. This will be a very good start to educate children in mechanical engineering concepts. Pneumatics pistons are used in SBS buses to open and close the doors.
Where can I buy Lego Mindstorm NXT? Is that available at Toystarus?.Thanks.[/quote]there are a couple of places. The official place is the Lego store in Takashimaya. I believe it's either at the 4th or 5th floor. There's also a Lego store in Great World City mall. I find the best deal at Toystation at Serene House along Farrer Road. My advice is to shop around for the best deal. Just call them up first (Google is your friend here for contact numbers) and get a quote before going down to the place.
The best deal outside of Singapore is Amazon.com. It costs about S$100 cheaper (assuming Zero shipping cost, which is what you get if you get a friend to bring it over from the US.) than what you can get in Singapore. Even after factoring shipping costs it will still be cheaper than Singapore. However, you don't get any support if you find any pieces missing.
If you do get the Lego Mindstorm, be prepared to spend time with him to get him over the hurdles. It is not something that a child can intuitively figure out what to do. If you need help on the programming aspect, Amazon.com has some pretty good books for people just starting out in this area. -
Thanks cinman!

I’m pleasantly surprise at my ds sa2 results. They are better than what he had done with exam practices at home. I can’t wait to see the sa2 exam papers, want to gauge if the sa2 papers are easy or he really performs better this time!

as long as they have put in their best effort, regardless of results, we should be satisfied and happy

hi
my gal in p3. since is she a 1 jan bb, she is youngest in class, i find it hard for her to catch up in terms of maturity that shows in compre n logic. hvnt got her final results but from wat has been revealed my guess is ave 80.
carelessness is one factor i duno how to cure. as absentmindedness is her nature, being a happy go lucky child. i cant make rewards a condition to reduce carelessness as i believe for all rewards, memory is shortlived.
she will feel sad if i dwell on the marks cos she did decently well but certainly cant compare wif some of her peers whose ave is 90 or more. i want her to be self-competitive but not calculative like her peers in the top class where kids monitor each other’s marks and scorn the losers (so bitchy right?). she is in second top class so i guess its good NOT to be in the top class given the children’s bitchyness in the elite class. u know, there are mums in the elite class who bugged other mums whr their kids got into 2nd round of gep.
anyway in comparing kids marks, we also hv to compare the sch’s exam structure and the cohort average and the top scorer’s marks. her sch eg, diff to score well cos for eg in ca2, her math ppr itslf is 88 but after adding 30 per cent daily work, dropped to 78. that means she got to be carefull all the time including daily work and the sch wont tell u whc pc of work is counted in rpt bk.
her eng exam for eg, has grammar cloze, vocab cloze and compre cloze can be all open ended (thnk so, got to chk)…they havnt test on editing yet.
