I’m pleasantly surprise at my ds sa2 results. They are better than what he had done with exam practices at home. I can’t wait to see the sa2 exam papers, want to gauge if the sa2 papers are easy or he really performs better this time!

as long as they have put in their best effort, regardless of results, we should be satisfied and happy

            hi

my gal in p3. since is she a 1 jan bb, she is youngest in class, i find it hard for her to catch up in terms of maturity that shows in compre n logic. hvnt got her final results but from wat has been revealed my guess is ave 80.

carelessness is one factor i duno how to cure. as absentmindedness is her nature, being a happy go lucky child. i cant make rewards a condition to reduce carelessness as i believe for all rewards, memory is shortlived.

she will feel sad if i dwell on the marks cos she did decently well but certainly cant compare wif some of her peers whose ave is 90 or more. i want her to be self-competitive but not calculative like her peers in the top class where kids monitor each other’s marks and scorn the losers (so bitchy right?). she is in second top class so i guess its good NOT to be in the top class given the children’s bitchyness in the elite class. u know, there are mums in the elite class who bugged other mums whr their kids got into 2nd round of gep.

anyway in comparing kids marks, we also hv to compare the sch’s exam structure and the cohort average and the top scorer’s marks. her sch eg, diff to score well cos for eg in ca2, her math ppr itslf is 88 but after adding 30 per cent daily work, dropped to 78. that means she got to be carefull all the time including daily work and the sch wont tell u whc pc of work is counted in rpt bk.

her eng exam for eg, has grammar cloze, vocab cloze and compre cloze can be all open ended (thnk so, got to chk)…they havnt test on editing yet.

children’s carelessness in test and exams and assignments :

they will mostly grow out of it and they move up the grades

student 1 : wah, i discovered 7 careless mistakes as i checked through the answers, and got back 14 marks!

student 2 : wah, you not only good with your work, you are also a very good checker!

                  ksi:
                  Strparent:

                  cane ?

Cannot be...the son needs to consider and I don't think Chenonceau is one who uses the cane on her children, at least not for academic stuff.

CAMP? Maybe a \"drill\" camp to eliminate the carelessness? :?

     He IS considering the use of cane. I do use the cane but under very structured conditions with each condition pre-defined and agreed to.

                  (1) Cane with Daddy as witness.
                  (2) Predetermined number of strokes. In this case, I propose 1 for every 2 careless mistakes.
                  (3) Done by the woman he loves most - me.
                  (4) Done in bedroom with door closed.
                  (5) And only if the child freely agrees.

We have used this method to cure his carelessness once in the past. This is not a method the non-psychologist parent should use. There is too much to watch out for (that I have not written here) and the negative fallout can be very bad if you dunno what to look out for.

He is considering. If he doesn't agree, I will back off, and we will see how his carelessness is for SA1 next year, and then I will ask him again if he is still careless. Meanwhile, by the mere fact that my son is trying to make a decision, he is already thinking through whatever other methods he can use to resolve his carelessness problem... and he will probably propose something soon enough.

If I do this properly, I may not even actually have to cane him at all.

I COULD have caned him for the 8 marks he lost at the recent SA2 but that would mean that it is done without his agreement... and that will create many negative consequences that are even more difficult and long lasting and undesirable than caning. The child's agreement cannot be coerced either. It has to be a true choice.

may be useful for some kids, not all

if the child minds not getting better score, it works

                    sit the child down

go through the careless mistakes and see if the child understand the questions and see their own carelessness

if the child agrees it is careless, ask : is it worth it?

if the child says : no, not worth it, ask : are you smarter than this ?

if the child says : yes, I am better than all these, ask : is it fair to you to lose the marks ?

if the child says : not fair ! .....you and the child begin to win the battle on careless mistakes already

reinforce this talk as often as is needed without sounding nagging or scolding

it is positive empowerment of the child's ability and they will sure overcome and be \"automatic\" to be careful and check for mistakes

use the above tale of \"very good checker\" ... :rotflmao:

Yes, yes, yes!!!! Parents should use this way instead. It's more gentle and less dangerous... and anybody can do it. Don't do what I do. Caning is a bit like atomic power. If you know the dangers and know how to lay protection, it works great. But if anything goes wrong, you have Fukushima in your home. The effects last long and are very damaging.

Funz did something that I thought really good too to underline the message of waste using a wastepaper basket and some $10 notes. Funz-ies can you remember what you did?

If the child doesn't yet understand the value of money, then I think the activity can be adapted with objects your child does value.

That was done to impress upon that dear husband of mine that it is not alright to lose that many marks due to carelessness. I was struggling to get DD to understand that she is throwing away marks and DH is there saying it is ok what, not that she does not understand, it is just carelessness. To me that is the bigger sin.

I got the 2 of them and literally took 10X$10 notes and a dustbin and demonstrated to DH what his nevermind is in monetary terms. It is not marks that you are trying to pick up but marks that you already have but you stupidly throw them away. That exercise works better on DH then on DD. For DD, it was drilling that worked. I know, like caning, not something that is recommended for all. But well for DD, it made her more conscious about checking her work and the clincher came when she scored full marks in a few tests after she checked and corrected some careless mistakes. But that is by no means the end of it. She fell back to her natural in a hurry to complete everything self and the results showed. The good thing is, she felt the pinch and the next test, she improved. Up and down it goes, nature vs training. I am hanging on the the faith that with maturity, training will trump nature in this case.

Carelessness to me is a trickier problem to solve then not understanding or being weak in that topic. Especially if the kid is an average/bright kid. If they do not understand a topic, parents can help, teachers/tutors can help but carelessness, the kid has to correct this flaw themselves.
