PSLE - New Format for Maths

He could do Question 18. His answer was 68.kohjl:
My son came back and said that today's PSLE Maths paper was \"almost SMOPS level\" for some questions. He could not do #17 of Paper 2 (ie the second last question), ..
Wah, your son only couldn't do #17, ah? How about #18?
But he was careless in another question that cost him 2 marks. He may have been careless in other questions too....hope not! -
My son's maths has been very good. SA2 scored 100%.
When i came back from work, he refused to talk about today's Maths.
Later, he told me that it was very difficult.
He found paper1 easy and could finish all the questions, but paper 2 was difficult.
I guess as long as most people found the paper difficult, then our kids should not worry too much, cos the score is derived from T score. -
As a student myself, I trust that you will read my post fairly and without any bias. Anything that may be insulting in this post is not intended so please take this lightly.
As I have already stated, I am a Primary 6 student (just like your son/daughter), and thus I, as a student, has taken the paper first-hand. During this post, I shall be touching up on some of the issues you have been discussing.
To start off, I would like to say that although I may admit the paper was rather tough, there is no point dwelling on such issues. I have full confidence in the MOE, and their ways of calculating the Aggregate score-that is, as the paper was tough, the score would be calculated with consideration of the mean score.
Next, I would like to say that even though the paper had a FEW tough questions, not all of them were as tough as those that us students had revised through during the course of preparing for the PSLE.
As I do not have enough time to continue this post (as of course, the Chinese paper starts tomorrow), I shall continue this another day. Perhaps tomorrow. I hope you have fully understood my post, and the point I am trying to bring across. Thank you.

Thanks for the question. Your version is correct and the answer for the number of sweets that Ken bought is 68.
2. Joe bot some chocolates and gave some to Ken. Ken bot some sweets and gave some to Joe.
Joe ate 12 sweets and Ken ate 18 chocolates. The ratio of sweets to chocolates Joe had became 1:7 and the ratio of sweets to chocolates Ken had became 1:4.
How many sweets did Ken buy? -

Please see my earlier post. The question is incomplete. Congratulation your son's answer is correct.
According to my son, this is Q18 of Paper 2 (last question). The question is correct except for the names of the children (which of course is not important for calculation purposes). No other additional information was given.
here's de question for sweets and chocolate
Jane bought a packet of sweet and gave half to Sunny.
Sunny boiught a packet of chocolate and gave half to Jane.
Jane ate 12 chocolates, and Sunny ate 48 sweets. How many sweets did Jane buy?
My son's answer was 68. He used algebra to form an equation, but maybe it can be done by other methods. (Sorry, I can't explain more clearly as I didn't fully understand what my son said :oops: )
Can Vanilla Cake help? Thanks. :D
Hi kohjl,
Q18 of paper 2 (last question) is something like this and I think that your son has got the right answer ( 68 ).Here it goes (not in exact words):
Q18
Jim bought some chocolates and gave half of it to Ken. Ken bought some sweets and gave half of it to Jim.Jim ate 12 sweets and Ken ate 18 chocolates.The ratio of Jim's sweets to chocolates became 1 : 7 and the ratio of Ken's sweets to chocolates Ken became 1:4.How many sweets did Ken buy?
Suggested solutions
Draw a model to show \"after eating\" scenario, \t\t
\t\t\t
Ratio of Jim's sweets to chocolate (1:7)
Sweets []
Chocos [][][][][][][]
Ratio of Ken's sweets to chocolate (1:4)
Sweets [] +12 (+12 refers to the sweets eaten by Jim)\t\t\t
Chocos [][][][] (+12x4) - x 4 times
\t
Both amount of Chocolates are the same,so
(7-4) units = (12x4) + 18 (18 chocolates were eaten by Ken)
3 units = 66
1 unit = 22\t\t
\t\t\t
Amount of sweets bought by Ken->(unit +12)x2=(22+12) x 2 =68
Or use algebra which is easier.
Assume that sweets that Ken bought was S and chocolates that bought by Jim was C.
Before both of them ate, they had:
Ken -> 0.5C + 0.5S
Jim -> 0.5C + 0.5S
as each of them gave 1/2 to each other.
Jim ate 12 sweets and the ratio of Jim's sweets to chocolates became 1:7.
(0.5S-12)/0.5C = 1/7
3.5S-84=0.5C
Ken ate 18 chocolates and the ratio of Ken's sweets to chocolates became 1:4.
0.5S/(0.5C-18 ) = 1/4
(0.5C-18 ) / 0.5S = 4
0.5C-18 = 2S
3.5S-84-18=2S
3.5S-2S = 84+18
1.5S = 102
S = 102/1.5 = 68
Amount of sweets bought by Ken-> 68 -
