[Fun Poll] How satisfied are u with ur child(ren) results?

DS results OK, some up some down. DD just finished, no news yet.

At this stage (P4 & P5), as long as they hit certain reasonable target, I'm not so edgy.....but will ask/nag them work harder cos' the eventual goal will be PSLE.

DS is not so exam-smart, but he is disciplined and I know he himself wants to do well, so the rest is up to his own effort. DD tho seems less intelligent, has managed to do well enough (quite a lucky gal in this aspect)....she herself is anxious to maintain her position & takes care in her work....but somehow, still get careless. Since she feels the pain, I just need to remind her to be careful.

Guess I'm pretty lucky, have not had to cane them over their school results so far. Caning is reserved for behavioural/attitude cases. Younger children do tend to be more careless/bo-chap .... I did cane a few times & I really make sure it's hard/painful enough to make them sit up, remember and not want to be caned again. As they grow older & understand the implication of being careless.....I stopped the caning, the rest is up to them

So like what verykiasu2010 mentioned, as long as they have tried their best, I'm happy.

PS : Funx, I also did something similar. I reinforced the idea and placed sweets they liked and told them it's all theirs to take. But with each careless mistake, one will be taken away. So when one see the other have more.....they :stompfeet: and 'realised' what their careless mistake is causing them.

I remember there was another mummy who rewards her child for every careless mistake corrected. Have yet to try it to see if it works.

DD has been consistently losing 4 marks for her school practice papers before her Math test. I joked with her that she must have liked 4 very much, how come 4 marks lost all the time? This time round, she said she made 1 careless mistake and lost 2 marks... so guess it is an improvement over her practice papers (although last term she managed to get full marks).

Whoa! You Mommies are so smart!! I'm gonna think on this a bit more and see if I can adapt for my son.

It is only for SA2 that we started giving her some papers to try out, and taught her how to answer some OE compre questions. Overall quite satisfied that she is able to manage school work on her own at P1.


She has negotiated for a book should she get all Band 1. I am quite sure she has got all subjects Band 1, so have to bring her to buy the book some time during the hols.

After claiming her book, she then told me about her Math and English. So smart of her... Luckily the other 2 didn't disappoint.

it depends on where the 10plus marks go to.
if it is careless, then no problem when going upper primary cos by then kids supposed to be more matured and experience in taking exams.
if it is foundation issues, then more work have to be done to work on them before the syllabus gets tougher.
it also depends on the difficulty of the paper.
it also depends on the kids' mental condition when taking the paper (some kids blank out, poor time management etc).
everything is not cast in stone ah.

May I tap on to this thread to ask: How can we help our kids manage the exam environment stress ? (mental condition mentioned by jedamum) ds lost many marks in EL paper due to carelessness. After a long discussion, he said he was very stressed as he scored highest in class for CA1/SA2 and also the paper1 was more difficult than he expected. Hence, he was off-focus and didn’t do well. This kind of pressure/stress managment - how to train the kids to manage it ?

Actually, I also have the same problem and I'm still working through to a solution.


In SA2 last year this happened...http://petunialee.blogspot.com/2010/10/exam-stress.html. He did beautifully.

In SA1 this year, he again cried before the paper. He again did beautifully.

In CA2 this year, he didn't cry the night before but was a nervous wreck DURING the paper. He lost 16 marks I think. All careless. Cannot focus, so... very careless. He came back saying that he should make sure that he cries the night BEFORE the exam. I told him that it is all a matter of learning to steady his own nerves. He took that advice to heart and so for SA2, he steeled himself to be placidly calm throughout... and he was SO CALM that he was SURE that he wasn't careless.

But he lost 8 marks.

This time, when we debriefed, he said that being too serene made him overconfident. Then we remembered something from X-Men First Class. Charles Xavier was helping Magneto to UNLOCK his power which hitherto could only be unleashed when Magneto was angry. Xavier (telepath) went inside Magneto's brain and did something, and then he said \"Power is unleashed when the mind is balanced at the centre between anger and serenity.\"

I giggled and then I told my son \"Your focus will be best when you can balance your emotional state at the centre between fear and serenity.\" We're waiting till next year's exams to put our theory to practice. I guess it takes some practice and a few iterations of exams to properly get the balance right.

:rotflmao: Guess what, this is really coincidental but I just saw the movie on Sunday. Haha definitely can relate to what you are referring to.

Anyway my son's Maths result came back worse than expected. Haven't seen the paper but suspect he lost at least 10 marks because of carelessness. He is also very prone to nerves during exams.

Thanks, helped a lot ! but after reading your blog post, I think I was way too stern during debrief and didn’t give enough TLC ! My ds cried during debrief.
