GEP 2011 - Screening & Selection

I think that it is becoz there is a difference btw being gifted and being good at mugging for exams. ^.^\" Doesn't mean if ur grades are v good that u are gifted.


My DS1's best buddy and him often vie for top placing in class. My DS1 usually lose out coz his Chinese not so good. They are neck to neck in terms of their other subjects. I was also surprised that the boy didn't get through. It could be that he is able to mug well but thinking out of the box is another thing altogether.

I often wonder what is it they look for in the papers because they are also not concerned if a student finishes all the questions or not.

Just got a call from my DS1. His school Pei Tong got 4 out of 12 who make it and he's one of them. Not bad at all fr a neighourhood school without any GEP preparation. Think his school must be upset to lose 4 of their top students.

anyone has experience or heard of students using Round 1 clearance to change to a better school? what are the chances of getting a transfer and also to one of their best classes? sorry off track a bit.

If you read through the various GEP threads here you'll get a fair idea of the trials and tribulations GEP kids and their parents are experiencing, the good and bad, the work load... There is no one singular experience. Some kids embrace it and do really well. Some others are struggling, emotionally and academically.

Attend the parents briefing with your kid. Have a chat with the schools there, as well as ask GEB any questions you may have. Chances are you'll come away wanting to join GEP bec it is a marketing talk after all.

GEP program sounds both exciting and scary ! DS has not made up his mind yet . Didn't want to push him since I believe he is one of the 'lucky ones' that got selected.
Told him that his signature in the GEP form is very very very important , should he decide to go for it. This is going to be his FIRST VERY IMPORTANT signature milestone !

I heard that not all the questions are mark and taken into consideration. They mark only key questions to pick out the "gifted" ones. Hence, completion of the whole paper is not a deciding factor. My DD left 5 or 6 questions unanswered for the Maths paper hence I was surprised that she got selected.

Just4Fun- Yes! It most certainly is. What a huge step for them.


Sotongdad- I see. Yes, my DS also didn't complete quite a few questions.

Just spoke to his teachers who said only 2 students from his school (Kheng Cheng School) got through. The other student is a girl from another class.
