[Fun Poll] How satisfied are u with ur child(ren) results?
-
I am not fully against caning. I believe that if used properly, it can be a very effective tool to correct some behavioural issues.
There is no cane at home. My kids have never tasted the cane as a form of punishment/penance. I guess I am lucky that there basically has been no need. For me, the cane is reserved for the most serious of transgression and after all other methods to change the behaviour have failed.
My kids were curious when they heard that their cousin was caned and they saw the marks on his leg. So I went to my garden, cut a stalk of ginger bamboo from my planter and demonstrated to them how it feels to be caned and what they are feeling is nowhere near 50% of the strength an adult can apply behind the stroke of the cane.
That convinced them that they never want to see the cane in our house. -

This is something new. I always have the impression that we should not cane the child for careless mistakes or poor results but should cane the child if the child is rude/disrespectful or has very poor attitudes. Hmm.. something for me to think...I only use the cane for HIGHLY INGRAINED behavior that arises from just BELOW the consciousness. This is the case of attention to detail.
I don't ever cane for rudeness... for disobedience... for attitude. These things can be explained and talked through consciously. I agree with CoolIt that getting them to open up and discuss is far better. So I have never felt the need to use the cane. The habit of carelessness is situated below the consciousness.
If rudeness is an expression of unhappiness, I try to find out what is bothering my child. If rudeness is an expression of ignorance, then I advise my child. If rudeness is an expression of a negative attitude, then it helps to find out the roots of the negative attitude, and address it there.

It's JUST a perspective. Take it only as that. Our family is rather odd anyway. Different families are different. Our children are different. What works for me mayn't work for you.

Just saw DD's result last night.

Maths - :gloomy:
Not that she didn't do well in Maths, but of all the marks she lost, 5 was through carelessness. :stupid:
Before SA2 even started, I reminded her over and over again to be EXTRA careful with questions that come in 2 parts, especially when answer of part 2 is dependent on answer of part 1, and well....Murphy's Law.
The figures given in the question were 186 and 29. But she ended up adding 189 and 29! :slapshead:
Furthermore, she told us she checked through the paper 3 times!
She was lucky the teacher was kind enough to deduct only 2 out of the 4 marks!

My dd lost about 10 marks on maths due to carelessness and more than 20 marks from all subjects.

For maths, she can do the workings correct but write the answer wrongly, hence 2nd part also affected and lost 4 marks, teacher did not even give method marks.
For other subjects, careless mistakes are in the form of having ticked the correct answer for MCQ but shade the wrong choice in OAS, copy sentence from passage but omitted a word, she did this for 2 questions in her English paper and was deducted 2.5 marks as a result.
Was very furious when I go through her papers, told her to reflect and write down what she think of her results and why she lost all the precious marks. She can write and apologised that she should not just checked 3 times, next round she'll check 5 times instead to avoid all the careless mistakes :slapshead: Now my job during the holidays is to instill to her the quality of checking and not the quantity and seriously hope she'll learn from all these. Have also asked her to list down all the careless mistakes she made and told her I'll get her to read them before her next exams, till the mistakes are eliminated. -
I feel that sometimes we have to tell our kids what to check and how to check? For Maths, I will always ask my boys to put their answer back to the question and check whether it makes sense. Especially for word problems. Example: Mary has some marbles and Ann has 2 more than Mary. If the total marbles they have is 12, how many marbles does Ann have? Answer: Ann = 7 marbles.
Checking: Ann = 7; then Mary = 5.
Check: Ann has more and 2 more.
Check: total = 12.
If the answers are Yes for all the questions, then the answer is confirmed correct.
If the answer is NO, then check that you have copied all the figures correctly from the question. Then check the method, lastly the calculation error.
To check the work by doing the questions again is very boring and likely they will make the same mistakes.
This way of checking can also be used in some of the P5 and P6 questions. Checking can be done easier and faster in upper primary when they can use their calculators. However in P5 and P6, there is usually not much time to check unless your child is a fast in doing his work.

For ds2, I have already warned him before the exam that he has to be focus and not day dream in between questions during the exam. For the trial Maths paper, he did not have the time to finish his Maths paper. So I set very clear time frame for him in SA2 for each sections of the Maths Paper. Luckily in SA2, he could finish, check his work and did quite well too.
