2012 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

Has anyone been to Yu Quan language school? Any feedback on the Chinese Idioms course where they claim can help the child with chinese character recognition. My concern is that my DD does not understand the meaning of the characters and hence does not know how to apply in the exams…

I did not focus on the chinese idioms at all during my ds1 PSLE.They will not be tested in Paper 2. AT most can only use in Paper 1. So to me it is not so important.

Chinese idioms not needed for Paper 2.
Perhaps for CL compo/oral if the student can use some idioms appropriately...then can score marks. -
Hi All,
My DS will be sitting for PSLE in 2012 too…
We’ve started last week on his weaker topics on math…we don’t have tuition except for chinese and i’m worried that i may not know all the answers to his questions…too late to get a tutor now… and i’m not sure tuition centres are any good…any advice? -

Tho I do hope the kids will learn some proverbs/idioms etc to help score in exam, personally I prefer them to learn more and just simply appreciate them. Some of them are actually very very interesting. I have some collections since years back but mainly they are words only, so quite difficult to attract kids and people who have no interest, unlike the current versions with lotsa illustrations.PiggyLalala:

Similarly, when I try to teach some Chinese to my kids, I have never really bothered about syllabus....as long as it's age appropriate, no harm learning right? Let's hope I'm not using the wrong method

It's not wrong to teach kids more about Chinese...it's a language and Mother tongue. So they should learn more about it and not bcos of passing exams.PiggyLalala:

Chinese is a very interesting subject and when I read his Oral reference, I do point out to my boy.
Chinese is made more interesting now with those cartoon-like books to explain how idioms come about. -

Yup...bought a set yesterday from a pushcart at Bukit Panjang Plaza. $58. 13 schools I think.
Managed to staple and file 2 subjects this morn...too tired to continue.
Be careful when you handle the papers...I got cut several times, which was why I had to be slow and careful earlier. -
