GAT is an important indicator for schools because it gives them an indication of whether the child will be able to cope with the academic rigours of the school. The school would be doing an injustice to the child if it offered a place to the child based on excellence in sports and disregarded his ability to cope with his studies. The child would be miserable if he can't cope. There have been cases where children admitted under Sports DSA transferred out of top schools because they couldn't cope academically and were miserable.

Yes, because it is really quite stressed. I know know people in DHS who are thru sports, and at the beginning of the year, they are coping quite badly, but with the teachers help, they improve A LOT, so no harm trying to get into DHS thru sports, cos the teachers are nice and the environment people are all very friendly

1st, do you and your daughter want a co-ed school or a girls' school?

Next, DHS and NYGH are both IP schs. DHS has its own IP programme leading to A-levels whereas majority NYGH students move on to Hwa Chong Institute for their A-levels. HCI has its track-record of excellent A-levels results.

NYGH is also well-known for its aesthetic programme and has a very vibrant arts scene. If you see them perform, you can not only see the std but also the passion. Can't say the same for DHS.

Finally, distance is a real issue. Are you nearer to Bukit Timah or the East?

School fees is different. NYGH is an independent school, so you pay higher school fees there. It cost much more at NYGH unless your daughter quailfy for EESIS. However most independent schools have smaller class size.

NYGH is a school of choice over DHS for most girls from GEP. So it is likely that your daughter will find more school mates coming from GEP at NYGH.

Although DHS is coed, there are more girls there than boys. About 2/3 girls and 1/3 boys. I think there is no intake of new students at the year 5 level at DHS. So this mix with majority girls is likely to remain the same for 6 years. Whereas at NYGH, you spent 4 years in all girls school then go on to HCI where there will be same number of boys and girls and IP students are joined by top mainstream students.

Current principal at DHS is a ex DHS student and is a President scholar.

Though my gal is now studying in a girls’ sch, it is not a top priority whether to choose a girls’ sec sch or a co-ed.

Distance is an issue for NYGH as I am residing in the east,
so DHS is definitely nearer.
But her dad is willing to fetch her to and fro to NYGH if her results qualify her.
On deeper thought, I would not wanna her to waste too much time on the road
as she can have longer sleep hours, need not to wake up too early.

yes, i am aware of the fees difference but as told by my niece who is in rgs
if the pupil is qualify for the entrance based on psle reults, likely that you’re offered EESIS, just like herself (i mean meeting the criteria).

(1) NYGH girls move on to HCI under the 6-yr through-train prog (almost direct unless the child does badly). This is similiar to RI/RGS students going on to RJC. DHS has its own Yr 5&6 programme (through-train) but if DHS students want to go to top JCs like HCI, RJC, they have to be admitted like any other school students, without any privilege- ie to gain admission, they need to be outstanding- shown through DHS results and possibly CCA and leadership as they do not take 'O' levels.

(2) It's compulsory for sec sch students to have a CCA. No min time except that they must meet a certain % (min 75-80%) of attendance. How many hrs depends on the CCAs- some are very active and competitive, some others not. CIP- min 6hrs. View these as developing the character, tenacity and leadership of your girl. Sch is the best time for such development. The amt invested will lead to long-term gain. Wrt short-term gain, CCA participation,CIP and achievement will lead to a final CCA grade which is converted into bonus points for admission to JCs, polys and ITEs. The child gets 2 bonus if the CCA grade is A1 &2, 1 bonus if CCA grade is B3-C6. Of course, for through-train students- the bonus points does not apply but if your girl is outstanding and has the intention to apply for scholarship and do competitive course in the University, CCA and CIP are very very impt and usually the deciding factor if everything else being equal.

I've nieces and a nephew from both schs, and I must say NYGH seems to produce more confident and passionate youths. Just like RGS, NYGH's development is beyond academic. Someone mentioned in the forum before about the difference between RGS and NYGH, that RGS puts the child in the deep end of the pool, NYGH guides the child there and DHS probably holds the child there.

Which is a better school for your girl depends on what you think your girl needs and can cope with. The intake of children in the 3 schs are very different and the schools cater to the profile of their students. So a child who needs a lot hand-holding will not thrive in RGS and vice versa.

Hello, i am a student from dunman high. About your question, DHS has a very friendly environment, and the teachers are very responsible, they give you consultations hours after school so you can clear your doubts. DHS also put a lot of emphasis on your character. About the IP programme, it is a little different from normal schools (school that take O-levels)because for them , they don't really follow the same syllabus, but i am not so sure about NYGH.
