hi Cats,

have a friend's daughter also transfered in from P3. Initially, she struggled - should she let her daughter accept or remain in the mainstream ? Eventually, her daughter made the decision for herself because she thought, \"Well, it's only once in a life time offer .... so why not ?\"

Her mother shared that for initial first 6 months - the school try to ease external students in slowly, knowing that it is a daunting task, a lot of stressful adjustments going on for both parent and the child. The transfer in new students had to leave their former school behind, come into a brand new school environment, encounter a brand new school curriculum, meet new Teachers, meet new classmates where the child often has to work in small groups for discussion and to display team spirit. Her mum said in view of this - the school does not immediately throw your child into the deep blue sea. For initial first 6 months at P4 - it was like a 'honeymoon' period. Her feedback was ... the GEP teachers in our school are very patient, encouraging and give your child approx 6 months time to slowly ease in, adjust & blend into RGPS school culture gradually.

however, during this time, the teachers also look at the attitude of your child. Yes, very important - they look at the child's learning attitude. The child should not say, \"Oh! i don't want to do this assignment, or don't want to participate in that discussion or project, because i'm not interested. Or i don't want to work with that girl with me in the same project, because i don't like her. \" When your child accepts RGPS GEP programme, she has to take in the entire holistic programme package. Child should not be choosing this or that. It is perfectly all right if the child is average - so long as Teacher sees that she is putting in an effort to learn, and the child submit homework assignments on time, when datelines are due. Because so much resources, precious time, effort, dedication from well trained Teachers coming from the Gifted Educated Board (HQ)- are dedicated to these 3 classes. So while the school is willing to train your daughter, they also expect your child to put on an armour of good attitude, a good teachable spirit willing to learn.

so during these 6 months of adjustment, parents - pls refrain from pulling out your child from GEP programme, if you feel that she has problem coping.

after 1 semester in P4, the momentum gained sharply. Her mom said when come to P5, they expose your child to ISO (Individualized Study Options), can can be in the form of:-

            - IRS (Individualised Research Study project),
            - IVP (Innovation project)

depending on your child's interest - she can choose to work on either one.
The projects to be submitted sometimes can be done alone, sometime in twos or threes per group. Her mom said her daughter had great fun, enriched and learning lots from interacting with her peers in small groups, also from the dedicated Teachers. She said her girl really enjoyed the lessons. Yes, she enjoyed school a lot. On certain days of the week, they stayed back in school for computer lessons, etc.

her mom said that in P5, they had to work very hard. Because when come P6, it was effectively only half a year - bec come around July / August in P6, both parent & child stressed up, preparing for prelim exams. In P6, her child had to prepare her portfolio of achievements, in preparation for interview to enter Secondary schools. Now her daughter is in Sec 1, RGS. She said majority of her classmates go RGS.

Anyone know if there be school this Friday speech day??

Heard from my DD, only price winner and performer (dance group, band group, etc) will be attending the event. The rest may not need to go to school.

                  Phtthp,

Thanks so much for taking the effort n time to provide such a good overview of the gep at RGPS. I have heard good things about the program but greatly concern how she would take the small fish in big pond impact. She only has Chinese tuition n I heard many gep children still need attend learning lab, in addition to the school work. I think that's quite a lot for a 9 yr old girl.

                  Deadline drawing near....:(

I will certainly keep u posted of our decision. Thanks!

Me too... my princess will be in P5 next year..
i also noticed there are quite a number of students get full marks in lower primary.... i think when come P4/5 things will change....

P4 cn still see full marks for certain subjects but after a year in P5... full marks a bit hard to come by. :gloomy:

Moonee, I am bracing myself for :scared: :yikes:  (take your pick). My dd is in p5 next year. Actually, it is thanks to you folks that I am aware of this jump in standard. At least I won't :faint: after SA1.

Dnt worry too much, give yr dd a good rest now but dont loose touch with what she has learnt in P4 especially for science n maths.. need not stress yr girl, leave that to the school, they are best at that ๐Ÿ˜‚ Consolation... the school prepares the girls well for PSLE.
