You know what they say about Maths/Sci training the left brain and music/arts training the right brain right. Yes, I actually think it's music - not me - that strengthens his character. DS started learning piano at a young age and performed at his kindy year-end concert when he was K1, in front of an audience of few hundred people.


He only played a couple of simple songs. But I guessed experiences like that allows him to grow in confidence and believe in his ability.

I agree with you.

Once a child gains recognition in a particular interest area, he is likely to be internally driven to do better in other aspects too -> manual drive mode becomes auto-pilot mode.

Scary:

I always believe that music can strengthen one's character. Thus, is a MUST for me that DS learns one musical instrument.

I believe it is the time & effort that one puts into the learning process that shape the person. Of course, due praises must be given from time to time to sustain the interest.

I made the mistake of just letting my elder boy practised the piano without sitting next to him & telling him how much/how highly I thought of his playing. With no one to compliment him, his interest soon died. Now he plays the piano at his leisure (I always tell him the piano is the most expensive toy we get for them :oops: ).

My P4 boy is aware that the older brother can play the piano well despite stopping at grade 3. He is thus very motivated to practise daily without my telling him anymore. Sometimes, he rather plays the piano than does worksheets. Btw, the piano teacher told us he is ready to start practising for his grade 1 exam :rahrah: after undergoing 7 mths of learning. I dunno if this is considered the norm or already slow but I am very happy with his progress.

My boy has two CL paper 2 tutors. That's why I slackened n did not revise with him. Big mistake. Another mistake was not following up on his EL, since those worksheets he brou back all seemed ok.

I was in a bad mood over his EL & CL results too. U take care.

Btw, this sch hols is a must made good use period to brush up as many areas as possible. Next year will be very hard-up for time when the twice weekly supplementary afternoon lessons start.

I'm bad mood over her 3 subjects - EL, Math & CL.
Compared to last yr, her P4 marks had dropped in BIG multiples for Math & CL, cannot think of next yr to drop further another 1 round of Big multiples!!!

So far, she's busy enjoying herself since exam over, she is going to Cambodia school trip next week.
For Dec, I will away for >2 weeks for biz trip & my personal trip.
Dh cannot handle her as he is a filial father :yikes: who listen to the kid.

i'm sure yr dd is just going thr a temporary phase and probably she's just as upset as you are over the results. maybe she just didnt want to handle this for a while. Or maybe she is one of those who need to be coached as a group so that she can be motivated by her peers.

oh yes, I agree with u....my job next to the piano is to tell him how good he is and when he makes mistakes, ask him to decide if he shd practise until it sounds perfect. He learns to set his own standards/ expectations & of cos the phrase \"practise makes perfect...\" ( i say that non stop :O)

1 reason my ds can swim afterall was becos i believe he listens, follow accordingly to the no of counts( ie like music) require for the swimming strokes. it was easier/familar for him to pick up once he underst that .

Just manage your expectations for P5 CA1. Notorious for Scared tactics, and Tremendous Drop in Scores - in the Region of Drop in multiples of tens ....

I started to get heart attacks and high blood pressure from this year...the year my son's P5 results dropped in BIG multiples. For CA1, try not to have expectations.
Twice weekly supplementary leave even lesser time for revision. So this holiday, it will be all round focus. Math twice weekly tuition starts this week too. I really wished there are 8 days in a week and 36 hours in a day...whatever. Just give me more time.[/quote]Janet dear,

Alamak, you guys make me out to be such a slave-driver.

I want more time for him to be at home to R-E-S-T…with 2 days of suppl lessons, I see him less and poor boy is tired after that. An extra day in a week will mean he gets ample rest and some play.

You'll never know how right you are. One day out-of-the-blue ds shot me this comment, \"Dad I like to play the piano because I realised that sometimes when I play well you'll praise me.\" And we were not even talking about anything remotely musical at that time. Strange fellow this one.

That's considered as fast in my books. My ds has been learning for 3 yrs before he began to practise grade 1 pieces.
