Hi 8228, your DS went for AMC 8 or AMC 10 ? I think AMC 8 it is for P5 & P6, can students below P5 take the test too ?

My ds took AMC8 last year (P4) and this year. The following is from Maths Oasis website:

Maths Oasis invites you to participate in the 27th American Mathematics Contest 8 (AMC 😎 that will be held in Singapore on 15 Nov 2011.

This contest is suitable for students from

      P4-6
Sec 1-2 and aged 14.5 years and below.

Oh, why he has to take twice ? I tot 1 time can upgrade to AMC 10 ?

I bought them together when I signed DS up for AMC 8, it's in the registration form, then they posted it to me.

hope they won't mind if we just buy the papers without training.

There seems to be differing feedback on the ACSs GEP results. From the horse’s mouth, ACSJ had 17 qualifiers from round 2 and ACSP had 13. That makes a total of 30 qualifiers from the ACS family, leaving 20 places for other potentials. Can someone help me with the advantages and disadvantages of doing HCL now as compared with later and if there is any distinct advantage of doing it at all anyway? If we opt out of HCL now, will we be able to opt in at the commencement of GEP P4 next year or at any point next year? If not, can we do so at a later point in time? Thanks for helping with these queries!

Hi! I am very blurred with all these test. May I know do all these test help in DSA?

emm...the more important one would be the school gep maths syllubus..if the kid is struggling and average for gep maths...I would advise to concentrate on gep maths first instead of going for external MO training,,,

From a purely PSLE viewpoint, the one advantage of taking HCL is that you can use the bonus points for application to SAP schools. You can't use the bonus points if you're applying for non-SAP schools. So if you have no intention of going to a SAP school and your kid's Chinese isn't that strong, you might be better off not taking HCL and use the time on studying for his 4 core subjects which actually go into the computation of the PSLE T-score.

From an enrichment pont of view, taking HCL now would prepare you better for HCL in secondary school. Most students would want to take HCL in secondary school bec if you clear it in O levels, you don't have to take it in JC.

If you don't opt for HCL now, you can do so at the beginning of the year. Or even at the end of P4.

Thanks Jtoh, this is really very informative.. Prior to this, i am equally blur ! So now at least I know how I can convince my DS to take up HCL .. so that he can say bye bye at A level ! :rahrah:
