Ridcully, are you still here ? I tried looking up for an answer but the debate is confusing me further....

Extracted from School Paper Grammar MCQ :
      ........
In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper __________ sides may be different in colour...

The answer key listed whose as answer.

but I thought \"which\" should be the answer as paper is an inanimate object ?
Both \"which\" and \"whose\" are available in the answer list but \"which\" is already used earlier on in the passage.
Is it correct that \"whose\" should be used for animated objects only ?

      Many thanks in advance.

        Still here...

These are relative pronouns. The way to think about relative pronouns is:

        http://i44.tinypic.com/33w8kmr.jpg\">

Note from the above table that 'whose' is possessive and may be used with both people and things.

'Which' is used to provide further information about something already mentioned, not to show possession.

        Some examples:
        1. Snow White, whose mirror is world famous, smiled.
        2. Teacher Ridcully, who is pretty ugly, looked and shattered the mirror.
        3. Teacher Ridcully, whom Snow White only met five minutes ago, tried to repair the mirror.
        4. The mirror, whose shattered condition was beyond repair, gave Teacher Ridcully seven years of bad luck.
        5. The mirror, which was now useless, was thrown on the scrap heap

In your sentence \"In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper __________ sides may be different in colour...\" the sides belong to the sheet of paper; hence, you need the possessive 'whose'.

                Hello Janet,

Maybe u can focus on compos and oral? These are the two components one can get perfect score.I think can work on S & T too. These three areas are the easiest to improve as compared to paper other sections.

Just one cent of my thought.

                Cheers,
                Leanne

                  Hi everyone

I have a question that’s bugging me no end… Would really appreciate help on this.

                  Which is correct?

                  a. When he had finished eating, John got up from the table.
                  b. When John had finished eating, he got up from the table.

I always thought (a) is more accurate since the first part of the sentence is a subordinate clause and the pronoun here (he) refers to the antecedent noun, John. But I was told by a school teacher, as well as my p5 nephew, that this is not the correct answer. Help!

                  MTIA!

                    Hi,

Need help in this grammar qn :

Qn. So you believe that my idea is workable, _________?
                    1) do you
                    2) don’t it
                    3) don’t you
                    4) doesn’t it
[dd chooses (3) and I thought it is correct, answer key is (1)]

                    Thanks.

                      Another qn (editing)

As soon as Andric realised that he had been tied upside down to a wooden pole, he heard a man shouted, \"Here comes the suckling pig to be roasted for Princess Sheau Wei!\"

Is the answer shout or shouting? Or are both acceptable?

                      Thanks again.
