Yep, the sad reality is that the rich man's kid will always has the full resource of top tuition centers or tutors to excel academically. The poor man's kid does not. So he or she goes for cheaper option of group tuition that really does not help those who are academically weak. It is a further waste of time attending classes n doing assessment work n their precious little money they have. These kids really r the ones who need good tuition support to improve. This is one unfortunate irony of life.

Even the MOE emphasis is an ironic. The best class usually has the best teachers, some even smaller class size when it should be the weaker students who need good teachers n smaller class size for closer attention n teaching.

i just feel that the purpose MOE system is just the govt's way of determining and extractg the cream of the crop, whc will eventually make it to uni, offer the scholarship and make them civil servants and politicians,. not really to educate the masses...

I will make sure that my DD know every word problems. If not, I will post on kiasuparents online and of course , others are so kind to post the answer online. Luckily, her tuition centre is also kind enough to teach her personally if she can't solve .

there are so many types of problem sums, how do u keep track and know whc type ur child cant solve, when the difference is just a small tweak ?
most imptly, wont ur child whine when asked to do?

I will mark all the assessments personally, if she's wrong, I will let her look at the solution. if she still don't understand nor me, I will ask help from others.

i taught my 2 sons maths from P1 to P6. It is possible to do it, but needs a good grasp of maths (and english too!) from the teaching parent. I do not think tuition is 100% good, dependent on your luck to match kid vs tuition teacher.

Yes, P5 Maths is really tough. My dd attended group tuition but frequently got stuck doing tuition homework especially other schools exam papers, very challenging.

Class size is rather huge so teacher couldn’t address every child & every question. Still need to be coach at home by dh on those sums she couldn’t solve.

Nevertheless, dh said it’s more manageable to coach this way. Rather than having 100% load on him to coach dd

                Dear all,

I swear by Onsponge. 🙂 I went through their parents' workshop and find their methodology very clear and easy to understand.
                Do they conduct parents' workshop?
Only saw the holiday workshop for kids on website

Yes. Usually at the beginning of the year. Go to their website and look out for the adverts.

Hi, I would think is possible to teach P4 maths ourselves.

Just to share with you DD maths at end of P3 was 80 marks and at the beginning of P4 CA1 dropped to 66 marks.

We immediately allocated almost 50% of time working on top school past year papers (head start before the SA1) and three month later she scored 82 for the SA1 followed by 95 on SA2.
Usually how soon before the sa1 do you start giving the exam papers, I was worried the child may not hv learnt the topic n may not be able to solve the question?

                      hi brenda10

does it mean for the whole year the child just work on exam papers and no assessment bks for math?
i alwayz wonder shd i let her do exam pprs or assessment bks? i thot assessmt is to drill the basic concepts and exam pprs is to apply them? may not hv time to drill them both
