Have something to share with parents here :

My daughter was doing mental Maths initially, she was able to do oral mental Maths at age 3 plus, using a method called See’s Maths ( an understanding of a Maths fixed pattern) from 1 to 10, back then she was able to do mental count orally for equation within 100, then at age 4 to thousands, then now age 5 plus, above millions, all with oral mental Maths, ie I say 1,000,270 plus 270, then she has to reply orally to me the answer, the beauty of See’s Maths is it does not drill the child, but to teach "concept" to the child, that’s why I don’t need paper to teach her, not only she counts, she could understand abstract to count negatives such 16-(-6) at age 4 by drawing on paper with axis X n Y, understanding division and remainder at age 4, knowing the concepts of multiplications as adding the same number equally many times ( doing Shichida’s oral 36x36 TT at age 4+), understands fractions, decimal, can do counting mentally such as 34.4-28.9, and after all that foundations laid to her, then I let her study abacus, about 2 months from now, i must say she is pretty fast because she has finished all her formulae by now by memory and by understanding too ( bc she is only 5), and All I want to say is my sequence is reversed with rest of parents here wherein I do mental Maths first, then only abacus. So I strongly suggest parents to learn up See’s Maths first to get the child with strong hold of Maths concept then abacus comes next then the child can never get confused as what mentioned by most parents here.

Would get the link later. By the way, I am living at the other causeway.

Heard that it's invented by the engineer to teach his son, and is also available in Singapore.

          The link to See's Maths.

By the way, I am also the one who introduced this method to the blogger. So I don’t mind to share in details if the parents are interested to learn.

              Hi venuschan,

the blog is only an write-up about the method. Is there any lessons conducted or resources as to teach the kids?

I am afraid I have nothing more to offer except the illustration of the method of how it’s done. This is a purely mental maths method.

I suggest you to go to the link and click to PowerPoint done by the blogger ( Shenli), in fact this system has a registered patent right in Singapore. The founder was secretive of his method, that’s explained why I learned from my 3 yo daughter and expanded the method to more than thousands, millions. The idea is simple. But what more important is to teach the child to recognize dots, visualize the dots, understand quantities, the younger child should be able to read the dots from head after you place simple 0-10 counters on the floor. Then addition within 10. First illustrate how the numbers are derived. Then ask if 2+3, 9+1 and so on, then ask what would he get. Slowly after the child is able to do any combination of numbers btwn 0-10 with mental, then he/she sure able to do 10-20 with mental and so on. You are advised to read the link, together with comments. If still not very sure then I would illustrate in details.

My DD now is also doing abacus. She started 3 months ago, is doing multiplication. You may ask why still abacus. I let her do oral Maths with See’s Maths, together with abacus, because I think this is a good brain stimulation/training, ( besides I HS her at the moment, she has nothing to do at home except Maths.) within a month, she was already able to do abacus freely with all the formulae. So I noticed all methods are related, be it a mere calculating skill or Maths proper.

Wonder if you believe, she started piano this year 28, January, less than a year she almost picked up all lessons in Grade 2, and her memory is good, almost able to play songs by heart, I kind of believing Maths and music notes in solfege is closely related, both are abstract, both are numbers. Perhaps that explains why she picks up faster and effortless to almost every song. So I suggest you re-visit the link I gave, I too learned from that very rudimentary method. It is definitely easy to understand.

I believe all parents know, just the execution of the method.

I am so sorry I only know the centre in Malaysia, but I dont know any in Singapore, so you may register with Shen- li’s blog, then try leave message with Jennifer See check with her if she provides any in Singapore, since she said she has patent rights in Singapore too.
