>More homework... - Which i think the banded kids reali love...
>More interactive lessons... - No fair!

Oh had heard that CHIJ (Kellock) conducted test for the P1 in the oridentation day. The kid took English & Maths. Those who do not fare well have to come to the school take remedial lessons.
The school guess would do streaming before P1. I gues most schools do have some form of internal streaming after P1 & P2. -

I was a PV at Geylang Methodist School (Primary). During their P1 Orientation Day last year, students are being allocated to their respective class and after that they were given math & English worksheets to do. Some can do very well. Some totally don't know how to do and cried. As a PV, I was told not to tell them the answer but to tell them treat it as a game and if you don't know just make a guess as all are multiple choice question. Those that did not do well, the form teacher will enourage their parents to send their children for enrichment during the holiday. SWEAT!!!
my dd was allocated her class before orientation...but during orientation, she was brought around and given some work to do. like a fill in the blanks for spelling parts of the school which she was able to do with ease. I KPO so asked her if any of her friends cun do. she told me blankly that only some can do and some never do.
no need to submit so I don't know if school is gg to see anything from these... -
heard from somewhere else that before any banding can be done, some schools put the children in classes based on their month of births. My dd is in the 2nd last class, coinciding with her month which is in the last quarter of the year… can someone confirm this? apparently they sort of expect that the slower learners will be those born end of the year??

which school is this? :evil:Heyya all,
During last week's meet the parents' session at kiddies school did
i just find out that last year's SA2, it was the beginning of sifting the
creme de la crop. Found out that TOP 120 students from P1 were
assigned to BANDED CLASSES! Seriously... i don't remember
being informed of such a practise in that school, and its a neighbourhood
school mind you. Stress ah... Stress...
Know what? Because classes of this new generation don't go auto
format ABCD classes but with fancy class names.. (Like 1 Gumption,
of 1 Aries, 1 Taurus, 1 Excellence and so on...) we will not know which
classes exactly are the banded ones, unless our children are in it. Was
told by another friend that circulars were sent out to parents of the TOP
120 in last year's Primary 1 with regards to their children being selected
for the banded classes.
What goes on in the banded classes? This was what i heard..

>More homework... - Which i think the banded kids reali love...
>More interactive lessons... - No fair!
So, thats my story... Sigh.. Sreaming at P1 man...
Can you believe that? -

I don't think grouping of students with the same capabilities is meant for that purpose such as better teachers, more homework and so on for the \"branded\" class.
Students from P1 came from different pre-school education. I believe the school just want to provide different speed and level of guidance to different group of students based on their P1 academic performance. I don't think I want my children to be stressed out if he/she has no prior phonics background and not able to read well as compared to others in the same class.
Try to look at it from the brighter side. Given different level of personalised coaching for different group of children, you child can improve from that. I believe parent is still the best teacher to your child. -
Assessment is an important aspect of learning and teaching and therefore at some primary school they conduct a test either through formal conversation or some activity. Though assessment at this early stage is not much needed but yes it provide some useful information that can supports your child’s learning and holistic development.

Some schools does assessment of P1 kids during orientation or first few days of school. This is not for streaming, but rather to identify weaker kids and put in the necessary support for these kids - eg. reading programme / buddy help / PV run tuition programme, etc. It is good for early intervention and that such support is provided to assist the kids in coping with schoolwork.
