I think what acforfamily meant is the chinese test papers taken by GEP students are not the same as the mainstream. The format is quite different too. The comprehension part is definitely more difficult for the GEP students. Since they are using the same text book, so if you do not consider this as GEP chinese, I can respect your reasoning.

I guess different school has different policy then. Most of the GEP schools chinese paper taken by GEP students is not the same as the same school mainstream HCL. In fact, the exam period for GEP students is not the same as mainstream students in most GEP schools. So how can they have the SAME paper?
Please do not make a conclusion based on special case. Because in other GEP schools, there are different set of papers for GEP and mainstream.

Do GEP students study Mandarin at a different level?

I understand that they do cos I was told by a parent that the teacher showed the kid the differences between GEP Chinese, Higher Chinese and Normal Chinese.

Ok. I checked with my centre's GEP student who is studying in Rosyth. He said that there are those who are average in Chinese n so they do not take HMT.
I suppose it is logic, right? If the GEP selection's criteria does not include Mother Tongue, how can they be expected to do HMT if they are strong in all subjects except MT.

I know in our boys' sch there are 2 gep classes. One class does HMT and the other does not.

david59, what you said here is correct. GEP students do not have to take HCL if they do not feel like it. BUT I think your student did not explain in details to you. For those who are taking HCL, their chinese test paper is not the same as the mainstream HCL.

My son is in P4 GEP this year.

There are 9 GEP centre to choose.

If you do not want to do HCL, do not go to Tao Nan, Nan Hua, Catholic High and Nanyang (those Special Assistance Plan (SAP) Schools which offer only Chinese Language as Mother Tongue).

In the other 5 centres, you have an option to do NC or HCL. The comprehension are more difficult, similar to PSLE style.
The children do not have the same examination paper on the same day as the mainstream. We can compare by checking the paper at free test paper website.

Eg in P4, The composition are the 4 picture (20marks) for the mainstream P4. But for GEP P4 their composition is 40marks , similar PSLE, 5 picture + 1 \"question mark\" picture.

                Sorry to edit,

The NC and HCL is GEP is tougher than the NC and HCL in mainstream. But in GEP, you can choose to do NC or HCL. This is what i am trying to say.

GEP students can choose to take MT or HMT. They use the same textbooks as the mainstream. HOWEVER, they do not sit for the same MT/HMT school exam paper as the mainstream. They sit for papers set by the GEP branch. All 9 centres take the exact same exam paper at exactly the same time. These papers are set at a higher standard than the mainstream exam papers. Their worksheets are also harder.

Are we talking about the same thing here?

                    i) \"If you do not want to do HCL, do not go to Tao Nan, Nan Hua, Catholic High and Nanyang (those Special Assistance Plan (SAP) Schools which offer only Chinese Language as Mother Tongue).\"

Do you mean these schools only have HCL ONLY? No normal CL or ML?

ii) So GEP can still take normal CL in some schools. Even this is different from the non-GEP (\"GEP CL\"). Ya?

iii) For some schools, they only offer 2 types of CL, HCL and normal. There is no GEP-CL specially for the GEP. Ya?

From what I gathered, acsp seemed to have only 2 types of CL in P4 coz there's where they are encouraged to mingle with the rest of the cohort. But in P5, I thought I heard comments that the normal CL for GEP is more difficult than the 'normal' CL, ie, there's a socalled GEP-CL. I never bothered to confirm this so wonder if someone can verify

So perhaps some kind soul can enlighten us on the above before we continue to hamtam each other :celebrate:

So they are taught the same thing but the CL exam expectation is higher.
