Dunman High School (Junior High)
-
moirwong:
hi moirwongHello, can anyone advise me 1) what is the Mon to fri timetable for a sec school pupil (junior) in DHs? are pupils expected to return to sch on sat/sun?
2) Is language art actually a combination of English and literature? How are lessons normally conducted? Out of curiosity, is there a good number of lawyers and English journalists produced by DHS?
3)Are contents for each subject taught at a higher level? Eg sec 1n 2 are exposed to sec 3 n 4? Do you think the pupils are well prepared and grilled towards acing in their A-level?
4) Is there a timing set aside each week for pupils who want to discuss with or get help from their subject teachers?
5) what is the cca culture? pupils chase their dream cca or cca looks for them? Are pupils normally successful in getting their ideal cca? Wat is the commitment required from students? Which are the popular ones and any pre-requistes?
Please comment. Thank you very much.
wow....a series of Questions.....
May i attempt to answer yr queries for Junior high in DHS
1) The timetable for DHS is in a period of 10 days.
For Sec 1, generally, in a wk, there are 3 short days and 2 long days.
shorts days end at 1.45 p.m, followed by 3 rd lang at MOELC,
some days will need to stay back for projects, discussions and role-play practices.
the 2 long days are meant for CCA which end at 6.30 p.m
(for some sports CCA, like track and field, will be 3 times a wk)
flag raising time is at 8 a.m ( need to be in sch by 7.50 a.m)
and at 9.a.m for Thursdays.
no need to return to sch on Sat or Sun....(unless required by CCA)
2) LA = english + lit
so for yr 3, even if the pupils do not opt for Eng Lit, still need to do 1 Lit.
I am not too sure of how the lessons of LA are taught,
though i saw my gal needed to do role-play practices.
3)Yes, for Maths in sec1, they do some sec2 topics
and for sec 2, they do some sec3/4 topics.
their Maths activity bks/program are developed in-house.
As for science, the topics are similar to the rest of the IP schools.
And for history n geog, there will be essay questions besides structured questions.
And for HCL (all pupils need to take HCL), DHS HCL std is high, in adddition, the marking and awarding of marks is stringent
4) Pupils make appt with the subject teachers for consultations,
no special timing set aside, it depends on teachers' availability.
5) As for CCA, same as the rest of the sec schools as to CCA chooses u
rather than u choose CCA.....
 (unless CCA like UG)
there will def be auditions and trials to go thru.
The Popular CCA in DHS are CO, Choir, String Ensemble and and EDS (english dance/drama)......hmm....i may miss out some others...... -
One more info, for parents or pupils
there is school bus service available ( 1 way transport)
to school in the morning and to MOELC. (of coz need to pay
) -
kiasu_mum75:
is there a new p who took over dunman high?
Yes. -
Princess Jojo:
hihi all,
i'm using my kid login name to write..
She is considering Dunman high as one of her choice for next year Sec 1.
Could you all pls. share with me about the SAP program?
According to my friends, this SAP program is only applicable to top few student/s.Althought i think my \"princess\" met the minimun requirement, ( A* for English and an A for HML and ML ) but i'm really not sure if she is good enough for SAP program.
thanks in advance.
DHS is a SAP IP sch, and all pupils get to do the same program for Eng and Chinese in junior high. -
thanks Augmum. Never thought that the process of selection of secondary school is even tougher then preperation of PSLE..

from yr reply, I am clear that Lit besides Eng is compulsory as LA in upp sec. Could u pls advise if LA= Eng+Lit in sec 1 n2 too? I read somewhere that Econs is incorporated in juniors' syllabus? Is this right? Do you hear or see a good nos. of DHSians entering Faculty of Law in NUS?
I saw yr next post regarding a new P. May I assume P means principal? Is it already made known to all?
Thank you for your time, Augmum :thankyou: -
:imdrowning: Hi Augmum
We are staying in Clementi area, wondering whether there is any school bus available from here and what is a typical travel time?
We are struggling in selecting from DHS / RV / NJC.
My DD prefers a SAP school and i suppose DHS is better than RV as it has a higher COP?
It seems the main problem for DHS to us is the transportation.
It takes about 1 hour to DHS vs 30 mins + to RV/NJC.
Do you think it is worthwhile to choose DHS?
Appreciate your comments :imdrowning: -
Princess Jojo:

u're welcome.
Actually, the selection process isnt that tough since we are given 6 choices
and the recent COP of schools were made known to public......
for the 1 st or even 2 nd choice, most of them would likely choose the schs with slightly higher COP,
hoping that the COP for this yr will drop......
as for the rest of the choices, pl be realistic...... -

i think there are schoolbus services fr AMK in the morning......Hi, (school bus service available ( 1 way transport)
to school in the morning and to MOELC), I live at AMK, how to get there?
as for public transport.....actually i am a dumbo at it as i dont take public transport,
perhaps others can direct u much better......
btw, the nearest MRT station is Aljunied where there is a direct Bus 158 ,
avail at certain hrs in the morning and afternoon,
esp for DHS students, and the bus-stop is located just outside DHS.
and the new circle line, nearest is Mountbatten station.
