Comparing Pre-school English Reading and Phonics Enrichment
-
sean wife:
For LW, they have to bring home a book and read and then during the next lesson, they have to read to the teacher. I didn't observe any solid phonics are being taught. There was some writing but looking back, I think it was a waste of $$$. Liftoff is more solid. Eg. they are taught to decode words and there is a comprehension each lesson. Maybe not so much on grammar/ compo. But between the 2, I would choose liftoff.Hi MMM,
For Lorna Whiston K1 program, is it mainly reading program or they also cover quite a bit of writing, grammer, comprehension skills? Comparing between LW and LCentral Liftoff program, which one has more writing focus?
Thanks for sharing!
lcentral also introduces new vocab in its comprehension passage to the kids. eg. boisterous, etc... -

Sweety Orange, where do you live and what is the reason for not continuing with ICR/Leapbooking/JG Edudrama after the trial/1 term? Different kids will thrive under different enrichment schools so letting us know the reason for leaving the above enrichment schools might give us a better idea of what your DD prefer/can thrive in.Hi all, i am searching a good english and phonic class for my 3.5 yr old dd. Hi Leo, thanks for your reply.
I stayed at Sembawang. The reason stop ICR is because the my DD teacher don't really able to engage with kids, there are children crying, making noise thru out the class and the teacher busy take care of the kids, leave littler time to teach. As for leapbooking, it is operated by a mummy, the class end due to her pregnancy.
Currently my DD still with JG edudrama for the 3 terms. Tot of withdraw her because i feel the class size is too big (12 kids with 1 teacher + 1 assistent). And things they teach my DD already learned from her CC...also due to the size of the class, the teacher can only pay littler attention to each child, and there are no feedback given until we ask... most of the time the feedback are very general (e.g. she is doing good...etc). Another reason also due to the distance
Am looking for a homebased teaching kind of environment, where the teacher is able to identify individual kids' strenght and weekness, and develop accordingly. At the same time, we get involved as a parent, so we can do our part at home after the lesson...
Sound very idealistic? not sure if i aiming too high not  -
Hi sweetly orange, then go for ICL - I Creative Learner

Just would like to check if anyone has tried montessori phonics (as weekend enrichment)? Understand that there is pink…blue…green scheme to go thr’.
For those parents who have tried, does it really help the kids to read well?
My DS2 gg 5 but still cannot read so sourcing for a effective reading structred yet interesting program.
ICL is so full!.. and ICR is another option although alittle far…
Was previously considering MA but not much comments on that and it seems that they dont really teach phonics in a structured way, although they claim that they can help the child to read well… -

hi hquek,
hi rainbows, if your child is in kindy, I think you worry too much...kinda remind me of my nightmares prior to A level result release (I dreamed I got Z - as in way worse than F). I'm sure the kindy would prepare them for primary 1.rainbows:

n2 kid meaning 2006? so my boy wouldn't be able to attend together with the sister ;(
icreativelearner not so much for reading new words but for grammer, creative writing, etc? will enrolling in the class help with primary 1? now, i'm getting very anxious. don't know whether she's prepared for her primary 1. what happens if she failed all her subjects in primary 1
yes, icl will be good for grammar and writing. There is a lot of focus on writing sentences. At K2, they are doing comprehension and a bit of composition writing - at this time, I think it's not the kids who write but the teacher will guide them HOW to write compo and WHAT to look out for in comprehension.
icl classes are conducted 6 kids in 1 class and the kids are all same level - there is no mix. This is done in teacher's home so there is no way both your kids can be at the same timing. Currently I drop one off, then pick him up and drop the other off. And I'm not the only parent...I see some fellow parent also doing the same.
There's icl at primary level but I think they have not opened up for registration. In any case be prepared cos they will give priority to existing students and I understand demand is also strong. For 2006 kids, classes have started. But if you are flexible about timings, there may be vacancies still...not hard to catch up. Alternatively, you can try for the K1 crash course (I think that one skip the alphabets and flash cards reading part).
regarding ICL, does siblings of existing pupils have priority?
if we intend to enrol at P1 level without going through their preschool programme, need to take an entry test? TIA.
anyone can share their P1 programme? TIA. -
Hi jedamum,
If its the preschool program, siblings may enjoy some advantage in enrollment. I booked slot for ds2 months after ds1 joined. Not that sure about the primary program as each year they will open up enrollment on a particular date. I only know that existing preschool kids will get to register at an earlier date compared with non preschool kids.
Don’t believe there is any entry tests for non preschool kids, but you should check with them to be sure.
Based on limited verbal understanding from parent, I hear they also do the whole spectrum for English with some coverage on idioms. The parent I spoke to liked it enough to be running from pri school program and preschool program for her kids (different venues).
