Can anyone advise me on the class size for HCI, pls? Wd it be the same size all the way from Yr 1? Do the teachers teach well or must a lot of family support be given? TIA!

Yr 1 and 2, largely no change of class. Class size around 30 - 33 for most classes. Yr 3 and 4, if u are in cse special programmes, class size about 20 - 25. Others will be still around 30.

Most teachers are ok. The boys also need to pay attention and take initiative to do their own research, and be consistent in their revision. Teachers are very approachable and respond quickly to parents' emails.

Transiting from pri to sec schools, the boys have a lot of adjustments to make.Hence, it is important that we give them as much support as possible.

Welcome to the hci family !

think someone mentioned before the ispark class size is smaller, 26 -27 .

Yes, the teachers teach well. My ds could cope well independently without any tuition for the past 1 year. The first time I feel so relax and need not be involved during exam period. πŸ˜„
Hi there! New mommy here. My boy has gotten a confirmation into HCI on the 24th November recently. He managed a 260 and was offered the EESIS tenure for 6 years, if I am right. Is this scholarship auto-renewable or does it mean he will have to maintain good grades to get it renewed? What will be the school fees for HCI from 2012?

Proceeding from here, can you advise what I can do to help my boy prepare for next year ? Will children from neighbourhood schools have more difficulties coping with life in HCI than those from elite schools?
Oh yes, this 3rd language thing, he is also offered. I sort of encouraged him to try Malay as it is conducted in HCI itself. He says NO to 3rd language cos' he is afraid he may not be able to cope with work plus the hectic CCA. Will this affect his aggregate in any way if he doesnt pick up a 3rd lang?
I am thinking of getting him to read the Literature novels to be done in Sec 1 at HCI. Do you happen to know what HCI has all along been reading for Lit in Sec 1. I'd like him to prepare in some way or the other, instead of idling and playing hand-held and computer games as he is now. Do they do mainly novels in the first year or novels + shakespeare + poetry? I'd like recommendations on the books, if anyone can help!!!
Thank you very much for your attention!!!!!! πŸ˜„

The Essis scholarship is renewable based on good progress. I don't know for sure how they define good progress. But I supposed you cannot be failing or performing below expectation. School fees for yr 1 and 2 is $200 per yr, yr 3 and 4 is $250 per yr and last 2 yrs $300 per yr. these are fees for Singaporeans.

Preparing for next year, do lots of reading this holiday, on all genres. Should also read on current affairs, and both in English and Chinese.

Not doing a third lang will not affect his aggregate, don't worry. Those who do, sometimes request not to include in their total aggregagte in case the grade pulls down their aggregate.

Welcome to the hci family. I am sure you son will enjoy his next six years n hci.

The school fees mentioned above should be per month instead of per year.
Oops... Sorry... Yes, per month. :imsorry:

You are welcomed. More than happy to share our experiences. No matter how relax, still need to be consistent and attentive in class. Cannot slack throughout the year !

Agree. It is still a very competitive environment. What really touch me when my ds told me they were taught to help one another, to work hard and play hard. Saw some of them organize notes and share with the rest of classmate in facebook. So touch... They are also very committed in their CCA. Can really sense their HC spirit.

Hi,

Can someone please advise the following:
1) What is the English literature text used for Sec 1 this year? I know book list for 2012 might change
2) What is the HCL text used for Sec 1 this year?
3) Do you only have to choose 1 CCA or 2 CCAs (1 main 1 sub?)? Is chess club considered a main CCA?
4) How are the Sec 1 classes alloted - based on PSLE results or ???
Thank you for your input.

Lizawa and YCPang, thank you for the information on EESIS and 3rd Lang …

Another quick question, are we able to call HCI to "release" the booklist for Secondary 1 (2012)? Like if I send them an email, will they be able to forward the booklist in softcopy? Or is it possible to call the HCI bookshop? ( by the way, where is the bookshop in HCI? ) Sounds kind of kiasu but I am sure many parents will like to get the books earlier than hit the crowd on 22nd Dec … Do you happen to know the HCI bookshop number ??
Many thanks, once again …

The poor old lady will be busy answering call if the phone number is published here. She and her limited helpers are currently very busy selling uniform and books for the other levels and all consortium. If you are high T-scorer from mainstream, especially with DSA, it may not be wise to buy early as your ds may be selected for ispark. Came across someone who bought all the books in the end found that the child got selected for ispark and got to buy ispark books again. Even for mainstream, there is strand 1 and 2 which may use different lit books. this year they have Animal farm so if your child has not read this book, can start this one first. But this year may change again.
