2011 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

2ppaamm:
But must important thing they have a great mummy..
Paiseh, just sharing to hope to give others some hope if the child did not do so well in PSLE. I remember I was here desperately trying to get help from KSPs.Bbee:
:congrats: 2ppaamm and your DD2, both of you have done very well!
Yes your have proven that one needs to believe in oneself and sheer determination and hard work will pay off. You are a great mum and your DD2 is a tough fighter. Well done :salute:
What we need to teach our kids is hardwork and perhaps learning to take failure and handle things accordingly. Sometimes, we can work to get things our way, sometimes, it is better to move on and work on something more worthy, which is what we did. I agree DD2 did a good job. She achieved a GPA that many 5 years older could not. PSLE is only a little hurdle we have to cross, no one else in the world will look at it after secondary posting and perhaps a week or two in the sec schools. Certainly not when you want to go to the university, not when you want to get a job, not even when you apply for JC. Please remember, remember everyone. -

hi 2ppaamm and Edureach,
suppose a P6 child scored very well & enter an IP school.
at end of Sec 2 - for some reason or other, this IP student canβt cope & decide to switch over to O level track & then end up in poly, is it tough for poly students to enter local uni later on, say in these 3 hot, popular, favorite contested faculites (law, dentistry, medicine) ? -
Edureach:
I can see some parents whose kids scored btw 249+2 - 252 hoping to get into an IP school. Sometimes i wander whether they shld be in O-level track and make their choices after the O-level exam. Academically speaking, many of these kids are potential polys' scholarship holders.
More and more top 'O' level students are opting the poly route. It is not easy to get into the university through the poly route, but not impossible. If you are a top poly student you have a good chance, we are looking at a GPA of about 3.7. However, if you have exceptional qualities, I have seen students with GPA 3.1 getting into NTU/NUS. If the kid is not the study, study kind, they fair better in polys.
The government is trying to target 30% graduates. Meaning most who go to JCs will not get to uni as well. So both routes can be equally challenging. Figure if it is better to end up with a poly or JC cert if the child cannot end up in the university. The planning starts at the end of PSLE. Have fun! -

During our time Bio is a must for Medicine/Densitry.hi 2ppaamm and Edureach,

Nowadays only compulsory subject is Chemistry.
So you never know.
But if one has never done biology before, it will be very hard to cope with the medicine/dentistry course. -
in the polytechnic, there are only certain specialised field of diploma training that are recognised by local uni, to enter medicine or dentistry. Not all diploma are accepted.
assuming that this IP student converted to O level converted to poly took the correct diploma that is recognised, how difficult is it for him to enter say, dentistry in local U ? -

My question would be why would the student want to do law, dentistry and medicine besides prestige reasons and peer pressure, because none of my kids want to do these! They are boring jobs (seriously like to stare at teeth, feel people's body and argue the whole day?), and don't even pay well.hi 2ppaamm and Edureach,

These are tough faculties to get into simply because of herd's instinct, so no matter whether you are from JC or poly, these are tougher to get into anyway. Also make sure you have the right subjects for the relevant faculties. -
2ppaamm:
Hey 2ppaamm, alright hi fi :hi5: . My ds also no like the 3 faculties ..! Oki will let my ds know what u have said ..

It is down to his GPA in the poly. Can't really comment because I don't do entrance for dentistry faculty. Generally, it would be grades, CCA/service, then the interview. If his GPA is 4.0 in the right subjects, I'm sure any faculty will grab him over a regular JC student. I know I would.in the polytechnic, there are only certain specialised field of diploma training that are recognised by local uni, to enter medicine or dentistry. Not all diploma are accepted.
