Hi all, i need some serious advice. DS scored 255+2. Like many other boys, his dream sch has always been RI (i hope 2ppaamm, pen88 & a few othr like-minded ones are not rolling yr eyes already ^_^). We live in the east & VS is really close, but DS was fr CHS & he is really comfortable there. He was thnking of putting CHS as 1st choice, & hope to transfer to RI at yr 3 or 5. Btw, he prefers all boys sch and we consider HCI too far away. What do the experts out there think? I wld esp like to hear the measured response of 2ppaamm, pen88, jtoh & of course all other feedback wld b appreciated. Tk u.

I think if your son really likes CHS, he should stay there. A comfortable environment with familiar faces would allow him to develop his potential. You don't have to be in the best school to do well. It's about inner drive.

You can transfer to RI in year 3 via DSA but I think it's very difficult. I don't know how many places are offered but I think quite a few will be taken by China and Vietnamese scholars. The other option is to work hard at O levels, do well and apply for RI(JC) then. There'll be about 450 places available then. But you'll also have to compete with top O level girls as well at this stage.

Maybe other parents who have experiences at CHS, VS, HCI and RI can comment as well?

Yup, DSA in year 3 is going to be tough because they have somewhat allocated about 50 places for foreign scholars, so vacancies for local students is greatly reduced.
I also heard that now transfer from one IP school to another is not encouraged in early years of 1-4. They usually ask them to apply in year 5. Heard of one unsuccessful case of attempting to transfer to RI already.

My daughter score 243+1. Which sch should place at 1St choice? Bt Panjang Govt ; Nanhua High or Cresent Grils. 2010 COP: 243 for all. She is neutral to all sch. Thanks.

You should consider her nature plus location.

If she is very good in MT, she should go to SAP school.

Location is also important for some children.

For me, crescent girls will be 1st choice, follow by Bt.Panjang.

        Cheers!

          Hi

My DDโ€™s score for is 259+3. Her choices are:
          1) NYGH
          2) RGS
          3) DHS
          4) NJC
          5) NOT SURE
          6) NOT SURE

The general feel is this yearโ€™s cohort did not do so well and COP is expected to drop. Any feedback on this? Also, does anybody know, if there is only one place left for NY, being an affiliated school, will this place be allocated to a NYPS girl even though her score is lower? What are her chances of getting a place in NYGH given her score? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I think your dd's chances of getting into NYGH are fair. I don't expect the COPs for top schools like NYGH/RGS to drop because the EESIS COP is the same this year as last year.

Affiliated NYPS girls who score >250 will get a place in NYGH. NYGH will fill up the vacancies with their affiliated school first before opening it up to non-affiliates. So you'll be competing with non-affiliates not NYPS girls.

For 3rd language, from MOE website, those taking msp, csp, Bi and arabic will take an o level paper after 4 years is it ?

              No exam for French/German/Japanese ?

I read that a lot drop 3rd language after 1 year.
Is it for French/German/Japanese only ?
Or all 7 3rd language courses if want to drop can just drop ?

First, congratulations to your DD very good results. Her distinction in HCL is clearly an indication of her strong command in the language. if you do not get into NYGH, just go and appeal. I am quite sure she will be given a chance for an interview with her distinction in HCL.

Not sure about the affiliation allocation.

I also don't think that this year's cohort did not do so well. So far, already, I have heard schools with 25%, 33.3% and 40%+ of cohorts who score 250 and above.

Affiliation from NYPS only need COP 250 to get into NYGH. How the COP turns out is anyone's guess. We can only put in sensible choices and hope it works out well. Another possible consideration for your DD will be Cedar Girls' IP.

There are SA1, SA2 and topical tests for French / German / Japanese. Students who proceed all the way to Sec 4, also need to take the O-level paper for these subjects. If you continue to take the language in JC, you can also do it as a H1 or H2 subject.

I know for sure that the drop out rate for F/G/J is high. I don't know about others. Withdrawing is easy, just fill up a form. But can't get back in anymore. Also, the books cost alot. So if you want to drop after a term, it's really a waste of money.

                      a) are there students who purposely join IP programme for Sec 1/ 2 first, after that quickly switch over to O level programme for Sec 3/4 just to secure an O level cert, even though they can still cope with IP programme ? and then after that, use O level cert to join back A level JC ?

                      b) do you think taking up Russian as 3rd language is useful ?

Newlykiasu, is there any reason why your DS does not want to consider VS? I think he stands a pretty good chance of being accepted into VS IP programme, and with his score, he should be able to handle the accelerated syllabus of IP. In addition, he wil continue to VJC, which is one of the top JCs, and I know a lot of CHS students joining VJC after \"O\" Level.

Looking at transfer to RI at year 3 / 5 involve some \"risk\" factor of getting it by then, vs getting into an IP prog right from the start. Esp. since the sch is at your doorstep and so convenient. I would luv to have this luxury!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi Pen88n, DS at this moment chooes CHS ovr VS cos he knws he will b happy & comfortable there vs VS new environment, also, he wants to keep his RJC dream alive. We hv to decide between the 'O' or IP route now. If his score had been 265+, i wld hv felt more comfortable & confident abt him doing IP, now i m not so sure.
