All About Preparing For PSLE

I heard from my friends who have kids in P6 and secondary school now. They say English is hard to get A star. Your kid must be a natural in it, must read a lot. Going for tuition helps but to really get that A star, the child must get almost perfect scores for oral, compo etc so the child should be already doing very very well in daily work. I think if your child is not like that, aim for high A. After all, it is the aggregate that is important not the stars.
Same here lah...started my son for P6 eng assessment like grammar vocab, S&T...but still get heart attack when his CA1 results are out. Any way to advise what title to drill this Dec pls ? For Science, my friend's son has an A* :yikes: and her son didn't attend any tuition at all.awfullyKS:
Hi parents,
I am rather worried about Science and English. I realize from hearing what my friends say that their kids can get A star for Math easily but not many get A star for English and Sci esp English. Is there any truth to this? How to help our kids in this area? -
Should drill a lot of synthesis, grammar, these sections must aim to get all right.

I'm drilling a lot in these sections. Dare not think of son getting A* as he doesn't like to read. A HIGH A may be more practical :scratchhead: A friend advised me to cut out articles from ST for him to read. So I'm getting him to read 1-2 articles a day which might be helpful for comprehension cloze passages.
Thanks jeestan. -
Reading newspapers helps, reading readers digest articles are good too. I am also cutting out newspaper articles for my kids to read but they are rather resistant to them, they prefer fiction.

Consistent work is key. Students who are getting B's and below should have tuition twice a week instead of once. Practices should include some challenging vocab or compre questions. My two cents' worth.

Hi 2011 P6 parents,
Can I have your advice - which type of Exam papers should I get for my DS who is sitting for PSLE in 2012? To give you an idea where I think he stands - He is not those aiming for >260 scores but will be very happy if he can get >240 -
1) Top schools’ P6 Prelim papers (Is that available from those pushcarts which sell the usual P1-P5 Top schools’ past years’ exam papers?)
2) Top schools’ SA2 papers
3) Past years PSLE papers (Is this available? Again, where can I find them?)
4) Ace papers? (Those available in Popular - are these filled with very difficult questions for the high achievers aiming for 260+ results?)
I am told that his school will use past years’ papers to drill them as class practices. Can I know if those are (1) or (2) or (3)? Or a mixture or ALL of them? I want to know so that in the interest of time, I can just give him only those that school is not preparing.
As it is, P6 is already going to be packed with revision and revision from school, I am trying to give the minimum to him so as not to add on to his workload, yet want to make sure he is prepared sufficiently to handle the ultimate PSLE! Came across quite a few 2011 PSLE students who supposed to do quite well in their schools but yet had surprisingly low T-scores, really got me very worried about my DS …
Thanks in advance for your help! -

You hv to check with your ds teacher what they are practising as different school uses different past year papers...usually a mixture. In any case, it is good for u to buy top schools past papers 2011. You can contact Jeremy at 98518226/98518229, he will deliver to your house. This is same supplier as those pushcarts. The whole set would comprise SA1 & prelim papers.
As for the past PSLE papers (5 yrs) you can get it from Popular bookstore. It comes in a booklet with answer sheets.
Let your ds practise top schools (2 years if possible) and PSLE papers as they will help him prepare reasonable well. Papers by top schools are set by experienced teachers who already know PSLE format (explains why their students do well). Do highlight those that yr ds got them wrong and go thru them before PSLE so that he doesn't repeat mistakes.
You might also want to check out kiasuparents thread '2012 PSLE discussions and Strategy' . There are good info that can help your ds do well for PSLE. -

JRLam:
Just to clarify, the PSLE booklet comes in 5 years series and the format is according to topics incorporating past PSLE questions. This is good for practice whenever your ds finish studying each topic. The top school papers can be used after your ds has completed all the syllabus for P6. Try doing these papers during June Holidays (this would mean that your DS has to study in advance) as time will be quite tight later.

Thanks Apricot for clarification. Also, really appreciate for introducing me to the \"2012 PSLE Strategy and Discussion\" thread. Read last few pages yesterday and got tonnes of advice! Will spend the rest of the year digesting all the valuable experiences and sharing from all of the 2011 PSLE mothers who had braved through the exam with their children and rewarded duly
