      Yithz,

I’m not sure which publishers are good or not.
I guess it also depends on your child’s level.

My younger boy will be in P1 next year, and I’ve bought him these assessment books :
      1. English - Enriching English by Dorcas Ang…Success Publications Pte Ltd
      2. Maths - Step-by-Step MATHS by Simon Eio … EPH
      3. Chinese - 课堂华文测验 (P1 Chinese Class Tests by Topics) by 黄海君…EPH
The Maths and Chinese are following MOE syllabus and they are going by topics. He can do mostly by himself.

I’ve bought more which he hasn’t started doing :
      1. Maths - Challenging Maths by Sandhya Sundar… EPH
      2. Chinese - 小学华文/小学高级华文 汉语拼音 (Hanyu Pinyin for Primary one) … Victoria Publications Pte Ltd

The 2 above are also following MOE syllabus and go by topics.

You can get them from Popular Book Stores.

              workingmom:
My P1 daughter is pretty good in English and Math so my comments are focused on higher ability books for these 2 subjects.

Anyone has any other recommendations for English for higher ability kids ? This is because my daughter's school 's English standard is pretty high.

              .
Just buy CASCO at a level higher for your daughter.

Which Chinese books are better - Victoria Publishing, EPH or SAP?

Popular staff recommended to me Victoria Pub. Dd’s 1st tutor liked EPH and her current one prefers SAP. I can’t read Chinese so I buy whatever they asks.

I also feel the Challenging Maths 4 in 1 is a lousy assmt book. Super longwinded and the question wasnt even the type which will come out in the exam.

Must know Maths problem sums by EPH. The sweets question is based on the same principle in one of the ratio questions. Challenging Maths is also tough. These two are definitely for high ability students but if your child is well grounded, he'll benefit from them.
I recommend CASCO and EPH for Maths e.g. step by step maths and How to improve maths. Andrew Er's are very good but most of my students hate it cos they find his books too difficult. CASCO came out with some new assessment books for English which I have just checked out yesterday. At the right hand corner it is written \"teacher's work\" - don't know what it means. :? For English, pick the topics that your child is weak in but grammar and vocab is a must, followed by comprehension. Those that come in exam format is good but your child will have little practice on the major components. The same for past year papers. I use them as supplementary material only. There are some new science assessment books also.
The key is to get those suited for your child's level and move up from there. I usually work with 2 and alternate them. Only after completing them do I recommend getting more. Some parents are really kiasu and bought tons of them which the poor child can't finish within the school year. This actually puts the child off and has a negative effect. It's also a waste of money actually.

most questions are 2-step questions. english standard have to be there before the kid knows what the question is asking for. maybe that's why it is 'Challenging'. 😉
