      autolycus:
The correlation between entry to NUS Med and relatives/connections in the medical profession is often due to exposure โ€” people with such relatives/connections tend to have a more realistic view about the profession and why they would want to go into it. It's roughly the same with the teaching profession: those with teachers in their family tend to pass the interview easily and last longer in the profession after graduation.

I suspect similar factors are at play in Law. I heard that at one interview, a candidate was asked what she thought 'jurisprudence' was about. I shan't repeat her reply. ๐Ÿ™‚
C'mon, you are teasing us now.

I wish you all the best, ngbrdad and all those who have put 7001 as first choice!

Dear autolycus, I am grateful (as are many other parents, I am sure) for your answers through the months. They have helped with our secondary school decision and my son will join ACS(I) come January. Both my wife and I are Raffles alumni but I believe ACS(I) is going the right direction in preparing young people to be ready for a more globalised world. ๐Ÿ˜„

I'm glad to have been of service. When all your sons are in ACS(I), you'll probably still have questions... not only students but their parents are taught to have a questioning frame of mind in that school. ๐Ÿ˜„

tisha: she said something like, \"It means you must be very cautious when applying the law...\" which is true, but not quite what 'jurisprudence' is about. So I went and wrote http://findhorn.blogspot.com/2006/07/jurisprudence.html about it because I was so amused.

SBC dad: let's just say that I'm heavily invested in that school, and am somewhat a specialist in that field. ๐Ÿ™‚

Called the school last Friday to check if there will be any briefing by the Principal on registration day. Was told no briefing. Just turn up to register and collect a registration pack containing GIRO forms, the Yr 1 orientation schedule, buy books etc.

The school over at Bishan takes the trouble to communicate with the parents, but I get the feeling they donโ€™t do it over here. As it is, half of the ACSP GEP class has decided to continue their secondary education "somewhere else". There was no effort whatsoever to encourage our own ACS boys to remain. So sad.

They donโ€™t set up sessions for interested parents n potential students to answer questions as well. Only staff at admin office answer questions as the questions come. Also have same feeling that they are not doing lot more to attract students. Why is this so?

clayman, Mum1113: I think the school's policy is to conduct briefings starting in the first week of school onwards. Trust me, there are up to six briefings a year, and I can tell you personally that you don't want to attend them all. As for not making attempts to attract students, sadly that is the impression I get too โ€” the school is already oversubscribed as it is, and I think they aren't willing to use resources to advertise as much as they used to before the IP/IBDP became popular. ๐Ÿ˜ž

They may be oversubscribed, but they don't seem to be attracting the top students. As it stands, the top 5 PSLE students in ACPS are not coming over. And if the chatter in KSP is anything to go by, ACSI is hardly at the top of anyone's list.

clayman: Generally (not necessarily only for ACSI), if a school has to rely on โ€˜attracting the top studentsโ€™, then clearly the school is depending on good students โ€“> good results.
