Oh really... then I shall wait patiently for the orientation... tks Karmelon!
karmeleon:
So funny - those are questions all covered in the P1 orientation forms.Blessedmum:
wow... hello all CHS mummies. My son is a fidgeter....cannot stop moving. A little worried abt him. Good th hear that the teachers are good!
Well...some questions:
1) How to arrange for school bus service? Is there a appointed school bus service provider from CHS?
2) Do they need to stay back after school for P1s?
3) What are the optional classes they can take? Some schools offer ballet, gymnastic, etc
So many questions..... dunno where to start too...
Thanks!
1) student handbook would have info. orientation forms too.
2) stay back? maybe. often there is 1 day for enrichment (can opt out)
3) optional classes - answered in point 2. *hehe* Do note that in CHS, some CCAs are available from P1 onwards, esp the performing CCas. -

Hi there, my son will be going P1 next year. Glad to join the group  Any advice for the P1 Orientation?
Based on my memory, the school's orientation was very well organised. I was given a folder with all the necessary forms to be filled and booklist. So, remembering your son's birth cert no. and bank acc no. to giro school fees wld b helpful. Having a valid email address and handphone no. wld help a lot as the school send important info thru these means(though they wld give hard copy to the boys to bring home, but u noe the boys cld b forgetful n leave it in school.)
In the canteen, there were enrichment centres offering Hanyu pinyin course for the preparation to P1, vendors for the name tags, transport and school uniform were oso there. I bought the school uniform, textbooks n stationery from the school bookshop on the same day.
As for the CCAs, the forms wld b distributed on the first week of school. But, just be prepared that the types of CCA the P1s can join are limited.
Hope this helps. -

Hi, what do you mean by Cath High's conceptual approach? Not following MOE? Pardon my ignorance.

In CHS, starting this year(for P1, 3, 5 only) for maths, they use worksheets developed by the school instead of those workbooks that come with the textbooks. The teachers use a different approach to look at the maths problems. E.g, they will ask the boys to spot mistakes on a supposedly correct answer to a question. But the methods(e.g. model solving) to solve the problems and the topics being taught are still in line with MOE. It is just another way to understand the questions better. My advice would be to buy the normal textbook, like My Pals are here, as a reference guide if u are not sure about the topics and how the conventional methods work. Then, u will have a better understanding when u compare the school's approach with the conventional methods.
I must say that though the worksheets questions might seen difficult/tricky for the boys(more to us parents ) . U will b surprised how the boys can do these sums in a matter of minutes once they are \"trained\". In this way, the school actually prepares the boys for the more complex problems in the upper primary. Just look at this year's PSLE exam questions n u know what I mean.

I have no doubt that the P1 orientation in Cat High will be well organised. Have also been checking around on what to do & buy during the orientation and also wat to bring for the 1st day of school. Hubby thinks I'm too anxious.

Granted in CHS they use their own curriculum for Math (yeah, no need to buy math textbooks). In CHS, starting this year(for P1, 3, 5 only) for maths, they use worksheets developed by the school instead of those workbooks that come with the textbooks.

My eldest boy just finished his PSLE, and I don't see the rationale of getting \"charisfaith\" to give tuition for CHS math?? :? -
My son, P6 this year, has gone through the Catholic High Conceptual teaching methods.
I’ve attended their Maths Conference middle of this year, and understand that they want the students to think out of the box when face with a problem.
The students approach a new topic in class, but being challenged why they need to study that topic.
For example, when learning about area of circle, usual method, is to know the formula, calculate the area with the given radius, etc.
But here, they are given difference circles and asked if they have the same area. Which is bigger? Why are they the same area?
I understand that they break into small groups to come up with the answers, and each group to present to the whole class. Where other groups can challenge their answers (or beliefs).
In this way, it forces the students to think deeper.
They need to find consensus in their small group to agree to a certain way of thinking about the problem. They then have to present it to the whole class. And they have to defend what they belief in.
The only set back I find amongst the P6 students. They seems to be able to do the hard questions, but they got some of the very basic questions wrong.
Why? Well, I attribute it to that the students are now conditioned to handle complex situations (difficult questions), so they tried using their "advance" methods on simple questions automatically.
Thus, they have to learn how to look at any question, and to find the simplest method to solve, if can’t, then apply more advance method.
Just my thoughts on this mater. Hope it’s of help to you.
