      Hi

In the same way that one can purchase Maths IQ books (from Casco and Maths456.com), are there any English (Language) IQ books, that anyone could list here, please.

Does anyone know of these books:imdrowning:

I don't think so.For language, no need IQ. Need a lot of reading will help to build the strong language usage.

        Hi

Chanced upon this book and want to know any comments on this book. This book is not an assessment book but would like to tap on this thread to seek views. My girl is weak in her grammar and sometimes, i find difficulties in explaining to her. Thanks much πŸ™‚

I bought Idioms in Action. My son read already, but I don't know it will help or not.Its like a comics books consists of highlighted pharases.I believe reading help in language,so I bought for him.

For on pharase they gave a short story consists of four pictures and each picture has one sentence. So when the kid read this he will understand where to use.

          Hi smartmummy,

Yes this book is available at popular. I bought it from popular only, I find it good bcos it covers everything from grammar, vocabulary, re-arrange sentences to comprehension. It also has a brief section for oral n compo.

I bought the series 1 to 6 for DS1 and DS2. They are evry prescriptive.

DC got put off by them.

          Hi,

I use this book as homework for my DD1. It has got examples n explanations which help her to do her assigned work.

I use other grammar, cloze and comprehension assessment books when I am home after work. So atleast she understands the basics without my help..

Anyway each kid us different, not all books are suitable for everyone. So
parents have to be observant to find their kids weakness and tackle them.

            Hi guys

I am writing this late at night UK time, and would appreciate a response by the time I wake up in eight hours, please.

I am giving DS1 the choice of completing EPH Complete Practice In Comp, Vocab, Grammar or the above English Guide Book, in his after school club. Both books are P4.

Can anyone suggest which is better. I really want to fill DS1's head with broad vocab. Complete is all MCQ, whereas English Guide has MCQ and OE questions, which is good.

But am I the only one who thinks that English Guide is easier.

Any thoughts on which is the more challenging book.

            Regards
            O

I bought these instead. My DD treats as comic books. :skeptical:

Does that mean that neither of the books is considered useful?

I think what smartmummy meant is that parents usually buy one of the titles. So they might not be able to give you a comparison?

I have used both books before.

The Complete Practice Book has more questions but I find the comprehension OE questions too standard and easy so I don't use that section at all. The grammar section is generally ok but the vocab section (organised by topics) may go into obscure words that aren't commonly used (and probably won't be tested) and occasionally some words that I can't even find in a dictionary would appear in the options. Certain questions are also not well thought out.

As for the English Guide, it tries to cover a lot of things. As a result, sometimes the practice questions test stuff that are not covered in the notes and may not test stuff that are covered in the notes. You will definitely need more practice than this book for grammar and vocab. Can't quite recall the standard of the comprehension questions.

I tend to avoid books from both series but I know many parents buy them because they seem value-for-money.
