Increase in Taxi fare...

if they remove all the surcharges, remove all the peak hours, remove all the location surcharge, then taxis will be every where

WCW:
the taxi companies are making a killing on the cab drivers directly and the consumers indirectlytaxi rental is $100 per day. even before they start work they have to pay $100 per day which has not include petrol and maintenance... that's why many taxi drivers actually shared the rental by having another driver.
if they increase the taxi fare and promised not to increase rental or other things, i guess there will not be much ho-ha... let's see few months down the road...
at $100 a day rental, it is $36500 per year, and before the COE went north to $70k, a taxi plus COE may cost around $100k or less, and it took less than 3 years to pay back the investment in cash terms .... and the fat cats in the corporate taxi companies are laughing their way to the banks with their fat bonuses...just another evil of corporation taking over the individual taxi owners ...... -

I knew of taxi drivers in the past and present (ex neighbours and relatives etc) and heard lots of stories. I heard that taxi drivers made good profits in the past but nowadays, they hardly make ends meet. I guess (from what I heard and I may be wrong cos I was so young and have no personally experience in the trade) in the past, taxi drivers own their vehicles but now they have to rent from taxi companies. Therefore, drivers in the past is their own boss and make good money after deducting their costs and can even afford holidays. Now, drivers can't afford to be sick cos they have to pay rental even if the taxi is idle. It is true that after deducting costs and fuel, they earn less than $2k monthly; hardly enough to support a family nowadays. They have to keep irregular hours and don't enjoy good rest inbetween driving as the thought of making that extra buck is always on their mind. Many drivers do not like to share their cabs (one driver rents from a taxi company and gets another driver to share the cost by working shift with him) and have to bear the total rental costs which is about $70 to $120 a day depending on the model of the taxi. They try to maximise their income by coordinate their plying time according to demand.
Hmmm.....was at a wake and chatted to a friend's buddy who is a taxi-driver for last few years. When we posted him the question \"is driving taxi hard these days? A lot of taxi drivers complaining earning less than $2K per month\"
Guess what....he retorted....a lot of them are not telling truth and also partly, many like to stop & go chat & drink coffee on & off etc. He shared that he can earn >$3k sometimes even $4K every month. He starts work ~6am every morning, only go for toilet and meal break, sometimes a short coffee break and ends his day at ~7pm. If he has mood/energy to extend, he'll extend to perhaps 9+pm. His cab is only driven by him, no sharing..... and he only works 6 days a week ie. no Sunday. Sometimes, even Sat is half-day.
So now I wonder...... -
Is true. My brother is a taxi driver and he can make >2k easily.

just go to Liang Seah street every weekend ( not sure about weekday since i dont go there on weekdays), and you will see quite a number of taxi drivers sitting at the coffee shop ,shaking legs, chit chatting. Whole bunch of them, occupies one section of the road with their maxi cabs, etc.

Anyway, very ‘xia shuay’ , Singapore , call ourselves first class but have this kind of taxi standards.
The other day, my husband, aftwr his dinner at Dempsy road, 9plus, couldnt get a taxi, and he had to take a bus to bukit timah road, and from there catch a taxi home. All taxis have gone to sentosa, marina bay sand, airport ? They would rather queue there then go to areas that have no surcharges.
All these surcharges have created the "make the earnings worth my while" kind of mentality.

That time went singapore flyer, we carried our kid of around 2 years old then. We que up for taxi. Guess what? A taxi driver drove in the taxi stand, roll down window ask where we going... then said it is out of the way. Drove away...
Then another came, do the same too.
The que behind us is getting longer. Finally a good man in the que spoke up for us. Giving a piece of his thought to the next taxi driver. Ok... the next taxi driver didn't give us this \"special treatment\", maybe because the helpful man help us first before taxi driver start the question on where is the location.
:gloomy: Give money for taxi drivers still give such attitude :? -
maybe the next one to increase will be the rental again  due to oil prices, surge in COE prices, population growth whatever

I have a friend who is having his free and easy holiday in China now. He mentioned in his fb yesterday that the taxi driver that drove him around has offered to bring a home-cooked dish to my friend and asked my friend to wait at the hotel entrance. The driver offered the home cooked dish so that my friend could compare the home cooked dish with the restaurant cooked dish. Guess we will never get the same attitude and service from our home-groomed and imported taxi drivers.
