        Karenjj:

anyone has kids in CS Montessori at Nex Serangoon? I am interested in their phonics enrichment program.. is it good?

Our fellow forummer n Montessori enthusiast (cantbearit2) I think has her child at that centre. Perhaps u wanna PM her. šŸ˜‰

Yes buds, my 4 y.o. DD2 is currently in their weekly phonics prog. šŸ˜‰

Karenjj, not sure if u r familiar wif Montessori phonics. She started in jul tis yr wif e pink scheme and has juz embark on e blue scheme.

Not to paint a rosy picture for u lest u get disappointed. IM actively teaching DD2 at hm wif phonics as well. Thus her progress has been v satisfactory for DH & me. :celebrate: Yes, DH too. He din understand my enthusiam & insistence on a Montessori education till he saw DD2's progress. He is now convinced tat yes, DD2 & in future DS3 will benefit fr a good Montessori program. He is oso convinced tat parents' reinforcement at hm will act as a catalyst in our kids' progress. Of course mummy has 2 put in lots of effort lah. šŸ˜“

We slow down e pace of sight reading for her but seems like she can read even better now wif phonics grounding. She is also able to spell 3 letters phonetic words. šŸ•ŗ

At CS Montessori, ey do handwriting practices as well. Her handwriting has made tremendous improvement too. She rarely has mirror image prob compared to my DD1 at e same age.

So far, she has enjoyed her lessons at CS Montessori v much. Nex yr, she'll b joing em 4 e daily lessons instead (mummy is so excited....!!! :siao: ). Reason being we oso wan to expose her to other Montessori areas like Maths, Cultural, Botany, Geography, etc. šŸ˜‰

Mayb u can share a bit more abt yur DD or DS? šŸ˜„

Thank you for your sharing. Really appreciate that:)
My dd2 is currently 3y.o., we do teach her at home and she can already recognise all the 26 alphabets. However, she still cannot write the alphabets or remember the phonetic sounds. She has asked to attend classes like her sister and we thought it might be good to start her early on English. We are contemplating between I can Read(dd1 school) or CS Montessori(nearer our home).
We have actually went down to the CS Montessori last week and honestly, quite disappointed with the teacher who did the assessment for my dd2. During the assessment, when my girl did not respond(she was quite shy that day), the teacher just sit there, look at her and wait. She emphaize that she does not coax the children in her class. She also mentioned that her class consists mainly of children 4-5y.o. I do not doubt her ability to teach but am concerned whether my dd2 is too young to benefit from attending her class.
We are thinking maybe to start dd2 next Jun when she is abit older.. Any advice?

IM so sorry to hear abt the disappointing experience u had.

As my dd started at 4 and wif personal coaching fr mummy  , she has indeed benefitted greatly.

Personally, I tink tat both ICR & Montessori phonics r gd. However e teacher muz b able to connect wif yur kid and deliver e prog well. Use yur 'mummy instincts'. If u tink yur dd will not benefit, u may wan to reconsider. Mayb u can try teaching her at hm first & c her progress? I started wif letting dd watch phonics dvd and using objects to teach her single sounds. We oso use sandpaper letters to let her trace cos she was not able to write then. Yes, at 4, she was not really writing, more like tracing. She had great fun while learning though. šŸ˜‰ Good luck!

Cantbearit2, is DD2's blending going on track now?

Thks for asking. She's doing v well.

Very happy to hear it! :please:
                  cantbearit2:
I tested her on Monday using LMA (she loves LMA, not sure why :scratchhead: ). She's able to spell out 99% (sound of 'e' & 'a' is sometimes confusing to her) of e pic cards I made (3 letter phonetic words). I was of course delighted. :imcool:
You bought LMA! :hi5: .... and you MADE your 3-letter phonetic words boxes! :celebrate:
Show us your picture boxes leh.. :please:
Most children love LMA. They feel like teacher when working with LMA! šŸ˜‚

You may try this and lemme noe if it works. šŸ˜‰

You open your mouth wider for words with the vowel /a/... and drag the
sound slightly longer. For the words with the vowel /e/... try the brief &
                  quick \"eh\" sound.
                  cantbearit2:
Most of e time, i tackle 1 vowel at a time. But tat day, I thot she was pretty ready so i mixed up e list of words like 'box', 'cat', 'mug' etc. Of course my pic cards is not complete in e sense there r like 5% of e pic cards not ready  (i noe it's not an excuse but e full list is v long lor....). My target is finish it up by tis wk. If she could spell tis words too, i tink she's ready to move on to e blue scheme. Er....cher, wat u tink? Am I moving her too fast?
I normally advise parents especially parents who self-teach not to rush to complete. But instead, work really hard on foundation. Make it solid so there is no need for turning back to review, revise and what nots. It wastes time and demoralizes a child when they have to u-turn to something already covered. Work to perfection of concrete understanding.

Since you have the boxes and the LMA, follow the process of :
                  1. Lay down picture card
                  2. Use LMA to pick out the sounds of the word (reflected on card)
                  3. Use word corresponding word card for self-check

On days she doesn't feel like using the LMA, you can allow her individual time to just work mainly on the http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?p=28531#p28531 all on her own. šŸ˜‰

When you mentioned full list is very long, exactly how many words and pictures did you actually do per picture box? How about the http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?p=17222#p17222? Did you manage to DIY that as well? šŸ˜‰
                  cantbearit2:
[BTW, she's enjoying every bit of e 'lesson' we did wif her (oso fr yur recommendations, games & all fr Growing Fun & Popular). It is so easy to motivate her to do writing too. I juz need to tell her, if she writes neatly for me, we get to play 'Bingo' game. Haha...of course e Bingo game is using phonics word cards. Reinforcement for her but she tinks of it as a game. šŸ˜†
The great thing about a non-threatening environment for learning is that the child never feels bored or even know they are learning, for they are always having fun working with variety of materials... what more with such a dedicated mom like u. :salute:

I am sooo proud of you, cantbearit2! :please:

You make me feel like a proud momma bear!
You have blossomed so much since the day we conversed
here with regards to Montessori Methods of teaching.. :celebrate:

Your cards look lovely! I also recognize the pictures and know where u got them! šŸ˜‰
Not so deep pockets? At least you're working.. so not too bad mah. :hugs:
Got them from enrighten arh? Ex right? :moneyflies:

You're concurrently teaching DD Montessori Maths as well? I got lobang for homeschool items.
Yah.. the tendency to forget will be there when there isn't hands on practice.
I will PM you abt the lobang. You see if it's within the uhmmm... pocket. šŸ˜„

                        Mai-paiseh.. you did great! :celebrate:

Buds_hubs also was awestruck when he saw how the method worked on our girls.
He co-sponsored some of our Montessori materials which till today is still in pristine
condition. :please: He was even a quiet observer. Cos there was once when DDs were
younger and they had access to materials they could do during their individual mat time
at home, i saw him revise \"exactly\" the same way i taught DDs with LMA and the materials
when i rushed out to check on the stove. Dun pray pray arh.. the positive influence
was great wor.. (Our DDs don't need external help till today at upper primary level).
Great enuff that he was the one who recently initiated that our buds_chubs must go
                        good Montessori school soon. šŸ˜‚

With a passionate and knowledgable directress, your children will LOVE their Montessori
