When my child has occasional cough, I started to ban him or her from fried food, chilled stuff and sweet drinks. These food will turn the cough worse. I will not jump at giving medicine or see doctor as then my children will become 药桶。

My DD2 who is born in 2009 was suspected of asthma as she has repeated episodes of thick phlegm leading to wheezing or wheezing leading to thick phlegm (like 8 times a year). The GP suggested stopping her milk intake as it is usually the culprit for generating phlegm. I didn't really follow his instruction as I think milk is still very important for her stage of growth.

My daughter is prone to wheezing and phlegmy chest. Things that worsen her case are dairy products and banana.
I used to avoid it till she was 3 or so. She is mainly on soy milk and plegmy chests have decreased. Hope this helps.
