I was in Perth 3 years ago doing a self drive with the Qantas 3 day package. I would recommend Busselton Jetty http://www.busseltonjetty.com.au/ which is a few hours south of Perth. I suppose you can stay one night at Margaret River http://www.margaretriver.com/ if you are interested in wines and outdoor activities. I did visit a cave there.
If you are interested in Farm stays, I would recommend http://www.ausbusiness.net/windmill/about.htm . The owners of the farm are very nice and they will cook for you and bring you around their farm. If you have small children, they would love it. DS was 3 years old when we brought him there. He loved the place.
There is a zoo nearby but I can't remember the name.
There shouldn't be any problem driving around Perth. I did drive to Frementle but didn't dare to explore much then since I don't have GPS then. But be warned that you must be prepared for long drives as distances between attractions are quite far apart. -
Thank JR. we intend to travel via public transport. is it possible?
-
Public transport in the city centre is OK but if you want to get out to the great outdoors and see more things in those few days, it can be quite time-consuming and troublesome esp with young kids. Self-drive is still the best.
Public transport is ok if you have no time limit. -
Alternatively, if you dun wan to drive, there are many day tours you could sign up with tour operators there. Just do a search on the web and book online in advance.
Their pickup points are usually in the city centre and they will take you to many places in a coach or mini-bus. -
Transperth provides public transport via rail, bus and ferry. You may want to check out the Transperth website for more details.
By our Singaporean standard, it may be time consuming to rely solely on public transport, and certain tourists’ spots are not accessible (eg. Margaret river, Busselton jetty, Albany). If u are happy to just explore the Perth metro area, the public transport can take you as far out as Mandurah, freo (south of the river) n to hillary’s Cove (north of the river). Nearer to city, one can get to Scarborough beach and Cottesloe Beach. One can get to Rottnest Island from the jetty near the Bell Tower in the city.
Signing up with a local tour operator is a good suggestion, especially for those far-away places. Check out Australian Pacific Tours (APT) website for more details. I travelled with them once when I went on their 4WD Pinnacles Tour, and another to Albany. However, I find them rather expensive.
Personally, I also think self drive is the best way to go. However, it is not impossible to travel F&E via public transport in Perth. One just needs to set realistic expectations, and still enjoy the vacation. JMHO. -
hi all
thank you for all your experience shared. This is the first time i intend to F&E Perth. I guessed i need to plan my trip properly. -
self drive is definitely more convenient and cheaper
was on a day trip and did not rent a car and taxi fare came up to more than a hundred oz dollars making 4 trips each about 12km only.
should have rented car when Hertz only charge A$57++ a day for Camry
I think it is a waste if don’t explore the wide openness out of Perth
I like Fremantle’s seaside dining etc -

Taxi fares in aus is crazy :moneyflies: U must hv made the cabbie's day when u took his cab for sightseeing
Yes, seaside dining at freo is nice. Except that the establishments almost never seem to change their menu nor setting. I was in Perth last month. Tried The Red Herring at East Freo. It was good.
Thanks for your recommendation to Salisbury YMCA. Great hotel :offtopic: -
