for bishan station, you got to walk by the main road, cross the traffic junction, etc and if it rains, it is a hassle

for marymount station, there is a covered linkway all the way into the school

both of equal distance, depending which part of school you are referring to ... year 1 -4 @ raffles square or year 5/6

I read in the earlier posts (2010 batch) someone commented that there’s a reason why RI did not pass the GAT tests of some dsa applicants. And that it might be better for those who did not pass to go to other good schools.

My son was one of those who did not pass the GAT. He is from mainstream. But he did well enough in his PSLE.

We put RI as the first choice. If he gets in, I hope he can cope with the pressure in RI. But does anyone know of students who did not pass GAT but still could cope in RI?

Of course..many many examples. Please put the GAT behind you. Most ppl don't even think about their GAT or selection tests after they enter IPs. RI GAT is juz an IQ test of 60 ques. It is juz used as a first cut to sieve the many many applicants. Let's work the numbers - 225 DSA vacancies, set aside ard 160-180 for GEP boys, left with 45-65 seats for sports/CCA boys and mainstream. So mainstream boy to get into RI via academic domain chance v v slim. A few in each academic domain perhaps. My own reckoning is for mainstream, becos they receive so many applications, after they cut by GAT, then they look at your DS profile. If your DS never pass GAT, they won't even know his primary school achievements. So bottom-line is don't worry about correlation between GAT to his performance in RI. After he enters RI, everyone is re-set to same starting point. yes he may not get used to SBGE pedagogy like those from GEP initially, but after he's settled down in months, it doesn't matter you are from GEP, mainstream, sports boys etc. GAT, PSLE results are all past...history. All the best to your DS in RI! :rahrah:

Thanks, Snowcrystal, for the very logical and reassuring reasoning. I've told my son to be consistent in his work when he goes to sec 1 just like he did in psle. All the more because he has never been a GEP student and has never been subjected to much stress except for the psle preparation. After reading your reply, it's comforting to know that it's still possible to survive in RI although he didn't make it through GAT.

                      :thankyou:

My fren's son from mainstream is thriving in RI. GPA near 4.0 plus in sports CCA. So don't worry too much. And if your son gets in, he's top 3%... can hold head up :imcool:
