All About Handwriting

i also used markers and got/create wipe-clean books to encourage him to write. a lot of encouragement/praise/foodbribes. luckily he has weekly writing exercises in K1 to force him/me to continue with writing practices. after the initial hurdle, he can write better than ds1 at 5yo. even his colouring is better than 9yo ds1. his sch teacher will get him to erase his work if it is not nice, so i need not be the bad guy at home..

Jedamum, I also attempted all that. When the food bribes finishes, his willingness to write also diminishes. Coloring, he's a total mess also. Its a vicious cycle - he has no confidence/interest in writing - does poorly - gets scolded by teachers and the cycle repeats.... :stupid: -

for colouring, you can use fat crayons or those 'twist' crayons (those with plastic handle and then when you finish, you twist the tip and then the crayons will extend out. we dont use colour pencils at all.jedamum:

My girl who is going P2 next year has inconsistent handwriting. Sometimes she can write very nicely, sometimes the hadwriting is terrible.
I figure it’s a mental attitude thingy… I have been trying to encourage my girl to write neatly and instill some pride of neat work… she must take pride in her work and that’s seems to be some motivation for her. However, the motivaton is not very lasting… hence I need to consistently encourage and remind her.
We need to encourage and explain the importance of neat work… in hope that one day they can really understand. -
my child is a left hander.
his handwriting is still acceptable but should i make him change to into a right hander by force to fit with the norm? will it be better for him? -
If left hander then cannot change to right hand.Observe what hand he/she using when pick up the things.
Left hand is inconvenient when writing as people beside, but its normal. -
Can i ask parents out there for advice—
My girl is going K1 next yr (4yr+ now). Her handwriting is not good compared to her peers, her tr has told us she needs to practice more at home. That’s fine with me so my hubby and I do try to get her to write words/numbers.
I am concerned because she writes letters like ‘S’ or numbers like ‘7’, ‘3’ in the opposite direction (ie Mirror image). even after we correct her (write the correct way then ask her to trace and write on her own) she still writes mirror images.
HEr other letters/numbers are fine but they are quite atrocious–very BIG, then small and not in a line. I am concerned because :
1. Is she possibly dyslexic? How can i find out if she is/isn’t?
2. her peers can write on a straight line, but i find that she writes crookedly, her letters sometimes need deciphering. Am i expecting too much for her age or do i need to be worried.
at first i thought all 4 yr olds write like tt, until i got a shock when i see her classmates handwriting are so much more legible.
Do u know if K1 students start writing in sentences? Coz my girl cannot sustain writing so many letters like 'Happy Birthday".===too many letters for her to write.
Any advice please? Help! -

my 2006 boy is a Nov baby too. his improvement in handwriting came sometime mid K1. when the class first introduced them to weekly handwriting homework, i drew lines and dots so that he could string the letters together nicely.
we used a 'handwriting chart guidelines' (that looks something like this http://www.first-school.ws/t/alphabet/holidays/back-to-school-zb.htm and stick it on the board right in front of his writing desk) and we guide him accordingly and he can see it visually how to write the strokes properly (i drew dots to start with). the chart divides the 'three lines' into 'headline, belt line and toe line'. so we guide him to write the letters to always sit on the toeline and when which strokes of which letter should hit the headline and eg 'f' to have the horizontal strokes at the 'beltline' etc etc.
later on, it is practice makes perfect.
his K1 sch work rarely has sentence writing, but this i believe differs from preschool to preschool. -
hm…perhaps u may like to explain to her nicely why is it neccessary to be neat?

Hi Parents,
My child is turning 3 year old and i would like to know how do you train your kids in holding their pens / pencils? I heard of this skill call penmanship, and how do we get our kids to learn that?
Thanks! -
