Son consistently produces poor results during GEP tests but you know what, he still got into HC through DSA with only an interview).

probably truly gifted, but very unmotivated?

on the contrary, he was not trained. we were not even aware of GEP until he told us about the test!

we have no doubt about his giftedness. since young, we received very positive comments by his caregivers in this area, in addition to complaints about him not paying attention in class, doing his own things…behavioural problems associated with ADHD or autism.

His main problem now is that he doesn’t like to write, which is affecting everything in GEP. Even in science, you need to substantiate the answers. So all those GEP assignment such as porfolio, SS is a chore to him.

And he’s not careful…losing easy marks here and there in maths and science. SIGH

well, don't think they can customise a programme to fit everyone.

Think most GEP will enjoy maths and science coz they shd be able to pick up the higher concepts easily, unless they got thru by 'training'.

My boy, well, probably a combination of factors. Unmotivated, immatured (not analytical), not expressive in writing which makes the rest of the GEP deliverables such as porfolio, SS bery tedious.

But nebbermind...1 more yr to go!!! :celebrate:

then I would consider myself a bit lucky.. my son can handle ss portfolio and project quite well so far. Sometime he would ask for my help and what I do is seat by his side ..( actually doing nothing just sit there as i also don't know how to do haaaahaaa)... then he will think think and do the project by himself... :rahrah:

                  Zann:

If they do not have the scheme of EESIS and DSA. who wants to take up this programme or take it seriously, then GEP branch will never been able to say that they have implemented it successfully. I feel in currently system, both kids and parents are suffering. Parents have to go and work and back home got to do third shift to support their children study. While others claim their success and promotion. When we were all school students, where got like that one! We also can produce Minister, doctors, lawyers...
I'm always surprised when I read remarks such as this that if not for EESIS and DSA, parents would not put their children in GEP. If those were the only reasons for putting one's child in GEP, then that person's priorities are wrong. And if the parents had to do a \"third shift\" to coach their children through GEP, then perhaps that child was not suited for GEP to begin with. Yes, GEP is very rigorous and tough, but the child should be able to cope without help and coaching from parents. Moral support, yes, coaching etc, not necessary.

                    rains:

My dd said the opposite. English was the easiest, GA was the hardest. But I feel that GA tests should have more weightage. As I recalled, there wasn't a GA test in the beginning when GEP started, and Maths was the emphasis then. Then they included 1 GA test. Now, they have 2. So it looks to me that GA tests are more crucial than English. I feel that the English test is just there to ensure that the GEP children have a certain standard of English.
What did your dd get for Maths & Eng ICAS ?

well i would say it depends on the kids. some super duper kids do not need help, some need a bit help but refused to be help and some super duper hack care( bo chup) also no need help haaaa haaaaaaa just joking  But of course some do need a bit of help at times ... Moral support is a yes for all time especially at the beginning of p4 gep... :snuggles:

It took me a while to figure out what ICAS was. Usually we call them 'NSW (New South Wales)'.

The school didn't make them sit for the Maths paper this year. Last year, out of 40, she only finished 20.

For English, the school made them take the Paper 2 and Writing component. She only managed a credit for Paper 2 and distinction for Writing.

In any case, I never thought that NSW is an accurate reflection of the child's ability as it tests different skills in the subjects. Her writing is definitely not distinction material as I see it. In her last Paper 1 exam, she only had 14/20.

For Maths, it's clear that the items tested are very different from the GEP screening and selection tests. So it doesn't mean that if the child doesn't do well for NSW, he will not do well for GEP.
