I know it is difficult for some parents to understand. I have met a kid chirping & discussing on Harry Potter books that I read. The books are really thick & my eyes nearly pop out when she gaily told me that she canโ€™t find the final series. She is my daughterโ€™s classmate & she was 8 years old when we were discussing this. Her mother is clearly embarrassed & she quickly inform me that the child is not hot house.

I personally dont think a hot house child is able to enjoy & finish the book on her own.

I do agree that children should enjoy their childhood. I was dismayed when I first look through this forum & found that parents send their child for brain lesson as young as a baby. They make me feel so guilty for being a hands off mummy, enjoying her business trip & work rather than caring about her children development.
Hi breguet,

Thanks for the article. Was just musing with a friend that every corner I turned into, there are \"gifted\" kids everywhere.

        ๐Ÿ˜‰

That's hysterical! ๐Ÿ˜„ I sometimes feel I'm the only one not gifted here. Gee, gonna try to get irritated at the collar ๐Ÿ˜‰

I know you are referring to the other thread I started \"Any parents of gifted children ?\" When I started that thread, I already expected that some parents will give remarks like the above. I know very well that you are trying to be sarcastic. But that is fine for me ๐Ÿ™‚ The beauty of an online forum, is that we have the freedom to talk about anything we like.
Tamarind,
I really don't understand what you're saying at all. Sarcastic about what? And why do you think it has to be about you? I replied to Chamonix in jest, which, I think wasn't off colour at all. She's not offended - why should you be? Didn't CKS say the same thing? I didn't see you attacking him!

I think you owe Chamonix and I an explanation and an apology.

May be I should be the one to feel offended. I am the one that bring up the clothes label in the other forum. Am I offended? Nah... I still stand firmly that my son is not gifted. Just bright, inquisitive & a clever boy.

But I do like the thread that Tamarind started on \"Any parents of gifted children ?\". The thread is so alive with discussion & the number of viewers are outstanding.

          Hi Tamarind

You fall asleep. Me? My favourite phrase is \"next week\"

Hi Mincy, Thanks for sticking up for me. Dunno why I'm being picked on ...

Hi En, I really meant it tongue in cheek. I caught the expression about the collar from CKS' post and thought he was hilarious. Glad you understand. Your son sounds really smart though - certainly smart enough for you to sit up and wonder what else you can do for him. I know I would ๐Ÿ™‚

But yes, freedom of expression is for everyone. We're all sharing opinions and ideas here. The best posts are those that hold different views from mine, so I can try to see what the other person's perspective is - probably because I'm worried about missing out, haha! I guess that's why I'm a kiasu parent . ๐Ÿ˜„

I hope we don't lose sight of what the discussion is about. What I like about the article is that it asks us to focus on the child and not the label. A question I'd like to ask is, is preparedness the same thing as gifted? In this day and age especially in our society where we place great value on education, are we equating the two? And is it really the same thing?

                Hi Mincy,

Thanks too. Didn't know that my post is treading on sensitive ground

                  My answer is No.
I believe that giftness runs in the family...it is somehow genetic (and from tamarind's other post, i believe her husband is gifted 8)). That's why doctors usually have their kids going into medicine and so on. ๐Ÿ™‚

                    My personal favourite verse...

I tried to teach my child with books.
He gave me only puzzled looks.

I tried to teach my child with words.
They passed him by often unheard.

                    Despairingly I turned aside.
                    \"How shall I teach my child?\" I cried.

Into my hand he put the key.
                    \"Come,\" he said, \"play with me.\"

                    ...
                    It's so beautiful... ๐Ÿ˜ข

As much as i would like to play with my ds1, i find his bossy behaviour a bit suffocating at times....it almost felt like he is dictating how i should play instead of playing alongside with me. ๐Ÿ˜›

That sounds like you have a little future CEO in the making ๐Ÿ™‚ The easiest way to win a game is to be in charge of defining its rules. Guess your kid really likes to win  .
