Q&A - PSLE Tamil
-
smartmummy:
Thank you for this info. We can at least check. For my 2 boys P3 and P5 no tamil tution as couldn't find a proper centre. Honestly, these days the tamil teachers are charging a high fee to teach tamil. My nephew has got one current sch teacher who teachers tamil once a week, 4 times a month with a fee of $320/- Not every indian parent can afford such high cost.
Hi sssdarlings!sssdarlings:
oh, my ex-colleague used to send her daughters to Queenstown CC for Tamil tuition. Recently I also saw nearby CC holding such classes. Maybe can check with nearby CCs.
Not sure whether its SINDA or UPTC but I have seen a banner o/s SINDA building for Tamil classes, starting from Kindy level if I remember correctly.
Thanks.I'll check. -
Hi All!
I checked with CINDA and UPTL, They don't have Tamil lessons.
For UPTL,they have for secondary school kids.
My son's school T advised me to send tutiton. -
SmartMummy,
Which level is your son in? My dd’s teacher has been saying the same since P4/5… i have a Chinese-speaking friend who opted for her twins to do Malay (cos she is ethnically a Malay)
she is very hands-on in coaching her sons and one of the activities she has planned is ‘learning journey’ to various spots in SG conducted only in Malay.
I may adapt her idea for my boys, during the hols, especially for the youngest who is going to P1 next year. He grew up speaking only in Tamil but once starting nursery, the MT got totally obliterated ;((
oh, another idea- we love playing Taboo. I plan to adapt it in Tamil so that my children are more aware of the vocabulary. so far i can only think of:
- football
- swimming
Any other ideas to share? -
Hi sssdarlings!
My son in P3. He started speaking in English. Before two yrs old I watched Tamil programmes with him.i speaking in Tamil only.He started Pre-nursery at 2+.At that time he didn’t understand a single word in English like come or sit. Then I use some words in English. Then he started to watch cartoon in English. When he reached 3,he started to speak in English. After that he didn’t know how to speak in Tamil. Then I teach by word by word.like he say "yes" I said "say Armam".Then he knows how to speak in Tamil but doesn’t like to speak in Tamil.I speak in Tamil he reply in English.Sometime I also started to speak in English.I always analyse where I got wrong but can’t find.
Read aloud the story books helps to improve the language — but he doesn’t like to do that.
We visit Tamil-story time (first Monday of each month in some libraires)
His T said he can actively partcipate in the class discussion. It is compulsory then he can speak in Tamil otherwise he doesn’t use the language.
My DD2 in K1.She like to read Tamil story books. She likes sing and dance. She enjoys watching Tamil programmes. She can speak in Tamil and English. -

I have the same doubt,I asked nobody answer.
leeven,leeven:
Can anybody advice me
My DS is P5 so just time to start worrying about PSLE.
hwa chong niche is chinese I believe. can students with MT=Tamil join the HWA. in this case what will they do for Tamil MT class. will there be any issue for my DS to adjust to the school .
No, they cant I think.
To be sure you can post this query under HCI thread, I am sure parents of students from that school will answer. -

Since my DS did fairly well, I was checking the various options I had. Since I didn't know much abt SAP schools (Now I know much better), I juz called Hwa Chong and was clearly told that those who took Chinese as mother tongue only can apply to HCI.
To be sure, whether this rule applies to all SAP schools, I called MOE and was also told clearly that to seek admission in SAP schools, the child must take Chinese as mother tongue, otherwise NO.
Hope it's clear to you now.
So, if you are an Indian or Malay or Euro-Asian whose mother tongue is not Chinese, no need to even think about the below SAP schools.
1. Anglican High School
2. Catholic High School
3. CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School
4. Chung Cheng High School (Main)
5. Dunman High School
6. Hwa Chong Institution (High School Section)
7. Maris Stella High School
8. Nanyang Girls’ High School
9. River Valley High School
10. Nan Hua High School
11. Nan Chiau Secondary School (Added this year 2011)
Good luck to your DS for PSLE in 2012. Ask him to work hard, there is no shortcut to success.

If so how did u prepare for the Tamil Language? There is only one exercise book available for Tamil at Popular book store - Tamil Oli. You can use that. Besides that you can visit \"Raj publications\" at Dalhousie lane, just near Little India. They sell various schools Tamil Q papers and also some Tamil exercise books.
