DSA Appeal 2011
-
I too was from the Rafflesian family (6 yrs) and share the same sentiments as pepper spice’s hubby. Sure, we benefited from it, but I have friends who after so many years still remember the pressure and low self esteem they had while there from being in the low end of the cohort. On the other hand, my husband, an ACSian all his life, constantly tells me how the ACS ties continue to help all through his working life. Nowadays when his sons are on the verge of stepping out into the working world, it always amazes me how with a few emails and phone calls, his ex school mates are able to extend help, even if it is just an invitation to send CVs.
The running joke in my family is : I am already the ‘daughter of a better age’ (must be the best, 2nd is not good enough, a message drummed into me in all my years in Raffles), while he and the boys are always improving, since ‘the best is yet to be.’
I was at DHS’s reporting day with DD. What I was most impressed with was the principal’s simple message of, ‘Remember you always have 2 homes, the one provided by your parents, and number 10, Tanjong Rhu. Anytime in your life, if you are in any difficulty, you can always come back here.’ If the school lives up to this, I will consider it good enough for my dd. -

This is touching. And yes... it is a quality I find missing from the Rafflesian schools in their quest to be the best. Life's success is so much more than competing and winning. Life's success is better found in mutual support. It's just more pleasant. No doubt, on every objective and measurable criteria, the Rafflesian schools are the best.
But in some instances, the best may not be good enough because one's priorities lay elsewhere. -
If there is a loophole in the system, there will always be people who will use it to their advantage, and there is no right or wrong about it.
And most of us, if not all, will want our best for our child/ children.
The only way is for the relevant authorities to plug the loophole. -

As with pepper spice , I also empathize with parentathome. As parents we want the best for our kids. There is really no right or wrong. I jus feel that this whole dsa thing has not been clearly communicated. It’s really true that many parents are caught off guard. We all know that a guideline is something we should follow but didn’t we were told to be flexible?
I have read v harsh comments here on how selfish those with dsa CO on hand now want to change their minds juz bec the kids PSLE score is now better. There is also those who equate such pupils as bond breaker? I think there is a difference. ppl who agreed to the bond signed on the dotted line w their eyes open as for dsa cases, I think it wasn’t stated in black n white. Also the fact that Ri, Rrgs and even NYGS (read somewhere in ks parents) entertained the dsa appeal upfront, it already shows that it may still b possible.
If someone decides to leave the dsaed sch, he or she is also doing a favour to those on waiting list. Isn’t it a win-win situation? It is not as if the released slot will b left vacant!
Parentathome, did your child put in an appeal form anyway? No harm trying.
I m curious how RI handle the dsa appeal cases. If after accepting $20 from all the dsa appeal parents they are not processing them, I will b v disappointed w such a top end school -
I believe both RGS and NYGH have informed students with DSA COs of the new MOE directive and have turned them away. I think RGS has also clearly stated this on their website. RI is the one school I know which has asked parents to put in their appeals.

Hhmm… So if my neighbour has this durian tree laden with the best fruits of the season leaves his gate open, it’s okay for me to go over and help myself to the durians? After all he didn’t tell me I couldn’t right? It’s his own fault for not locking the gate.

There is for sure nothing on rgs website. As mentioned earlier, rgs has a separate form for dsa appeal cases. As for nags heard that their forms also has a section for dsa appeal cases.
Green tree, how is your appeal to Moe? Your child sent in the appeal form to the dream sch anyway? -
Jtoh dun understand your analogy of the durian trees.

By exceptional circumstances, many schools have given the example of DSA sports students who are unable to continue with the sport. Students who want to appeal via better PSLE results have been told it's not a valid reason. Can't remember which school I read that from.

Transfer of DSA-Sec Students
Students who have accepted DSA offers from other schools may seek an appeal to RGS only if there are strong reasons and exceptional circumstances by filling up this form. Please send the completed form via email to [email protected], or print out the completed form and deliver by hand to the General Office by Thu 22 Dec, 2pm
