      Donut OR Doughnut?
      :xedfingers:
      http://i41.tinypic.com/190ak7.jpg\">

should be 'doughnut'. the shortened version is 'donut' cuz it's easier to spell.

            (4) aside
dd's answer is (3) apart but answer key is (2) forth ??

I agree that it's (3). To 'set apart' is to distinguish one from the rest.

            Vocab Qns :
Dark heavy clouds hung in the air. I went outside to collect my thougths.
            (1) amass
            (2) gather
            (3) convene
            (4) assemble
dd's answer is (2) gather but answer key is (3) convene ??

I agree that it is (2). We 'gather' our thoughts. 'Convene' is more for an assembly.

He had entered gruelling rodeo competitions ...
            (1) intense
            (2) vigorous
            (3) combative
            (4) punishing
Answer key is (3). I thought it is (4) and dd's answer is (1) ???

I've to admit I have no answer for this question. I thought a better answer would be 'rigorous'.
Although 'gruelling' is literally 'punishing' in meaning, it doesn't sound appropriate here since it's talking about competitions and 'punishing' for 'gruelling' usually refers to experiences.
'Combative' and 'vigorous' don't fit in here as they are usually used for physical activities.
I would go with 'intense' among the four.

            Pls help. Thank you!!!

However, I've just checked with my nephew again. Apparently his teacher has clarified that for a synthesis question (John had finished eating. He got up from the table.) the correct answer should be (a) When he had finished eating, John got up from the table.
              Hi

What is his teacher’s explanation on the choice of (a)?

I find it confusing and maddening when dealing with placing the order of independent and dependent clauses in complex sentences.

Should the pronoun be placed in the independent (main) or dependent (subordinate) clause? Are there any rules to say where to put the pronoun?

              Best wishes

                  Hi

I think these are possible answers.

In spite of having sprained his right thumb, Adam participated in the Asia Tennis Tournament.

In spite of his sprained right thumb, Adam participated in the Asia Tennis Tournament.

In spite of having a sprained right thumb, Adam participated in the Asia Tennis Tournament.

In spite of his right thumb being sprained, Adam participated in the Asia Tennis Tournament.

In spite of the fact that he sprained his right thumb, Adam participated in the Asia Tennis Tournament.

                  Best wishes

Missing \"had\". In spite of the fact that he had sprained his right thumb, Adam participated in the Asia Tennis Tournament. 😄

                      Hi Mdm Koh

Please help to explain why “had” is needed in this particular case.

Please refer to this sentence from this link.
