I understand that they will 'big wind blow' in P3 based on P2 results. So P1/2 same classmates, same teachers. P3 there will be a change. After that, I'm not so sure.So exciting next wk first day of school.
So HW stream in P3 too?
Thot was later. -

Streaming is a word used too loosely. What exactly are you all ooking for?

Academic Streaming (1)
If you wish to find out where is the best academic student in the school, they will be found only in 2 P5/P6 classes. Period.
Ability Streaming (2a)
Good-results students are all scattered mostly in 4-5 classes in P3/P4,
Ability Streaming (2b)
Children are also group into classes based on their Chinese abilities.
My conclusion
As a simple gauge, if your child go into a class where the Teacher spend most time 'lecturing' their behaviour than teaching, you will probably know how well your child fare in his level.

Fel2729..Hi lionheart n hquek,
Tks for both yr advise and sharing of experiences. I was expecting more stress in pri sch compared with pre sch. Cos my son's childcare is alr laying basic foundation for the kids maybe to prepare them for the real thing in pri sch. They were taught simple multiplications, nouns...etc and they hv english n chinese wkly spelling test and during that time i thought it's really stressful to be children of this generation (heehee). Therefore, thought that i shd be more prepared and expect more of p1 too. Now I'm glad n relieved tat at least for lower pri, don hv to stress the kids too much. At least to the kids, they will enjoy gg to sch
When kids or even adult thought they know a subject, they might refuse to listen/learn. They find the topic bored when they are not expose it correctly. Hence it create a wrong impression. The process of learning/unlearning is much more painful.
Based on my experience, the coaching process is far more painful when come to to coach a kid to learn&unlearn than coaching kid that knew nothing.
I will remain skeptical if young kid are exposed to skills that they do not need to know. It is not necesary good for the kid in the long run. -
lionheart:
oh. so that means strongest kids are not in 1 class only but could be spread out over 4-5 classes? and that there will/could be a mix of strong and weak kids in the same class?

Like this will weaker kids find it hard to catch up later if they are being put in same class as stronger kids? I understand it's good to have them mix and mingle, but feel there are pros and cons about it.lionheart:
So that means during class time there will be movements around say, when it comes for chinese/other subjects?Ability Streaming (2b)

okay, will start asking DS next time what his teachers do in class. My conclusion

Don't quite agree with what u hv said. In the lst place, parents would not teach their children the wrong thing ba? Unless the parent themselves cannot teach then i believe thats where the the enrichment centres comes in handy. Note tat children picks up the fastest fm age 3 to 6 yrs. it's up to each individual on expectations of their kids. For me i firmly believe in laying strong foundation so that whatever which may comes after tat will not topple! -
Thanks lionheart for sharing

Our experiences shaped our views about our approach towards our kids' learning journey.
I have heard of stories whereby kids ae rather advanced because of enrichment classes, that they are bored in school and lost interest which affected their results.
I have also heard of stories whereby the kids are not affected and still able to perform very well.
Some have shared, to learn about knowledge that are not covered in school syllables, so that a balance can be achieved.
I doubt that there will be a consensus because there are so many factors involved. The only constant is that all parents want their kids to be successful and happy, even the concept of success and happiness have many definitions.
I'm still learning and finding the correct path

Is it safe to say write English names for all the lined exerise books and Chinese names for all the square exercise books? TIA
DD1 only has pink jackets and during this morning dry run to the school, it was very cold. So will buy the school jacket, easier for her to blend in

As i treasure Character Development more than Academic Excellence, my focus is more of getting my children to learn life skills and moral values.
Enrichment centre / ourselves use rote-learning approach to prepare our kids for school.. Is that a right approach ? It always remain to be seen.
I stand to my view.. Many times, coaches/teachers feedback that they had to spend time makes kids to un-learn before they can master a topic. -
This is becoming more cheem to me. When my kids are young (and still they are quite young), I only focus on languages - english and chinese. I give them the help I can (read to them, buy books - okay, that part is my addiction).
I tried to coach DS1 in Maths but failed becos he doesn’t catch any ball and I get all worked up. Then I decided to stop and leave it to his kindy teacher. Happily, and I think in part due to his english standard, his maths results have been alright.
