No the schedule is quite outdated. Looks like she has pretty cool choices! For dance they want ppl who can learn dance steps very fast. Eng Drama is super competitive:( Chinese Drama i'm not too sure what they look out for though. Handbells, banana can help with that šŸ˜„ Strings definitely needs experience. I would have gone for strings but i didn't take grade exams so i figured out they wouldn't recognise me._.

Netball requires height element(so does bball).

Thanks Choco05 for your valuable advise. Think will have to strike off few from the list and consider others.

My dd is also considering below merit CCAs as well :
      1) Editorial Board
      2) Debate
      3) Robotics
Will you be able to share your experience? Frankly speaking, I am unsure if she can manage with 1 core + 1 merit CCA.

Haha personally I think Editorial Board is awesome (self-promotion again). Basically we write and layout articles based on topics we ourselves choose, and we peer-edit. After a few rounds, with comments from Editors/Chief-editor they'll finally pass through the teachers and get published - we have about four issues per year. There're also workshops for photoshop and photography and stuff to allow us to do layouts and stuff better, and the seniors are also great mentors and teach you how to layout, choose color schemes, write, etc. During the March hols we got Neil Humphreys to come give a talk šŸ˜„ You really learn a lot. And Tribune is a small CCA so it's very tightly bonded, we do ice-breakers, have CCA/batch outings, CCA/batch lunch, etc.

Anyway I think you should be able to manage 1 core + 1 merit, no problem. Many many people in my class do that, I do that, banana does that. It's a very very common schedule, more common than you think. Just don't be crazy and have four CCAs, that I don't know if you can handle, though some can. 3 CCAs though is manageable if one or two are one-day-a-week CCAs with lesser commitments, I had that schedule first semester (where I also had ICT, so basically staying back all days till around six and some days with overlapping commitments). But it should be fine, the teachers don't give that much homework and stuff, so I don't really understand friends who sleep at 12. But please avoid the schedule I had if you're taking Third Lang, which is another afternoon till six and with tons of homework and revision needed, you'll probably kill yourself.

Can I check if it is definitely for parents to be around in the afternoon on the 1st day of school? What do we go there for?

parents are invited to attend but I wont be there as I have a younger child coming home from school around 2:30pm, told DD to be independent, look at CCA herself, find out from seniors and teachers in charge and make a decision herself šŸ™‚

Actually it's fine if parents don't go. My parents didn't go for Reporting Day, not for first day, and they didn't watch the performances on Saturday, because they were busy. It's fine. There were some forms for parents to sign but I told the teacher that my parents were at work, and they told me to get signed at home, no problem.

Hi OrangeJuice, I won't be attending as well, as I am unable to take leave. Got to trust the gal to be independent and wise...... Good to know that it is not a must to attend.

Do you think its possible to manage 1core CCA+2 merit CCAs+French? I dunno, Im interested in both photography and robotics but dunno whether I can cope? Any advice anyone?

Also, for Robotics CCA, is it difficult to get in? If I took part in competition before but diddnt win anything, will it help or will it be detrimental?

Would like to know if dance cca is hectic? When is it scheduled on? My gal will be taking grade 6 exam next April and having coaching class for the exam 3 times a week, so wondering if RGS dance will be hectic else she will be physically tired out..... Not sure what other CCA she will be interested in though.... Hopefully on orientation week, she will be able to get a better picture. BTW, what are the merit cca, a must to take up besides core cca?

1 core CCA+2 merit+French will be a definite struggle. The Merit CCAs are on the same day, firstly, so you'll have to miss one of them. That means you won't be participating as much, and learning as much and bonding as much. Also 1 core = minimum 2 days, 2 merit = 1 day, French = 1 day, ICT = 1 day, so even if you miss one of your merit, you'll leave school at 5-6pm everyday. So the answer is, if you don't think you'll have problem with doing homework, revising Frnech and everything else including practicing your instrument if you have one after seven every night, if you can handle a week with three projects due and three SAs on a schedule with lesser sleep, if you won't procrastinate the projects, yes it's doable. Or else, something will have to go. Either your health/sleep, your social life/sanity, your grades, or your activities. It's impossible to have everything, in my opinion.

I'm not sure about Dance, but I think it's 3 times a week. Is she taking Third Lang/MEP/SAP? If not, I think it manageable.

Merit CCAs are not a must. They basically require less effort than Cores, and there are fewer competitions for Merits. Merits are also once a week only, and your minimum attendance is 35% instead of 70% for Core CCAs. However, regardless of whether you take a Merit, a Core CCA is a must.

Well, i think it's perfectly ok. I mean not that we 3rd Lang students actually revise everyday right. And erm French has a lot less homework, though the homework is more difficult.

Robotics can be taken up as a 2nd CCA, it's not a merit CCA. I think this year they rescheduled the merit CCAs to all fall on Mondays, one hour earlier than the Cores? Something like that. So why not take up a merit CCA? Most likely your core CCA will have CCA that day so might as well make use of time and not waste that block for the merits.

Revision and everything after 7pm? Do you guys sleep so early...7pm i'm still eating dinner you know.

During EYAs and SAs, CCAs will generally try to have less sessions, unless there are competitions. And the 3 projects to hand in, i'm sure these DDs are capable of not procrastinating! They should already be done before that if they manage well. Not like my friend, start one day before the due date...

It's not about 3rd Lang, it's about 3 CCAs+3rd Lang. 2 CCAs+3rd Lang is fine. For me, I had 3 CCAs, so school ends at 6, reach home 730, dinner+bath and it's 8 plus. I have to practice piano, and then I'm a FB-addict, and then there's homework and stuff. So I sleep at 1030-11? I'm one of those who needs plenty of sleep to keep awake in class. If you have piano+violin/other instruments, it would be worse. And a 3rd Lang would add to the schedule.
