Hi parents of 2012 PSLE kids,

Do you experience a sense of fear walking into the unknown next yr ? This fear has been making me lose sleep at nights of late. Am I doing sufficient with my boy or too much ?

Dear Janet,

I emphasized with you. Maybe it helps to know that your fear is quite normal. I never understood what PSLE stress/fear was until my dd had to take PSLE 2011. All friends of mine whose kid were in the same age felt the same stress. We all survived.... before you know it, it's over. :imcool:

Like to share some of the things I did to cope :

1) Listed out the fears and what I could do about it.
- For eg, My dd was in one of the best classes but unfortunately, the form teacher assigned was previously teaching in the not so good class. Hence, she taught too slowly and kept repeating simple concepts which exasperated my dd and me. At the rate she was teaching, I felt that she would not be able to complete before PSLE. So I actually taught my dd ahead of the syllabus and gave her practice papers to test her understanding/progress.
My son had caring and dedicated teachers in the 2nd half of this year...but next year he will not be going to a good class...so my concern is what kind of teachers will he get :frustrated: Anyway, I do believe in being a hands-on mum but my Maths is hopeless.

2) Worked out a time schedule with my dd and taught her time-management.
- Discussed with dd on the targetted time to finish the syllabus, do assessment papers etc. Gave rewards and incentives to motivate her to stick to her schedule. Also made time for play.

3) Constant communication with my dd
- PSLE kids are undergoing tremendous stress too so we need to constantly checked at their well-being. I deliberately made time to talk to my dd and her concerns. Also asked if she was coping alright.... whether workload was too much....whether she was too stressed etc. Prayed and motivated her. At the end of the day, I always remind her that as long as she tries her best, there will be no regrets.
I will check on him regularly to make sure he isn't too stressed out...thanks for this advice.

4) Timeout Treats
- My dd loves eating and shopping. So sometimes we'll cook her favourite food/go restuarants or buy her some stuff to help her cope with the constant stress of studying. This helps to renew her strength to move on.

5) My well-being
- The PSLE stress has also gotten to me but I try not to show that to my dd so she would not be affected. To de-stress, I made time to deliberately exercise, went out with friends and did things that I enjoy. Also, reminded myself that academic success for dd is not everything. There are many routes to success. If plan A don't work, try plan B, C , D etc.

I'll note down all your advice...thank you for your valuable tips. Need to destress myself to have stamina to continue this marathon till Oct. This is a tough journey man... :nailbite:
My son is also moving from diff screens - iPad to xbox and iPhone. I really wonder how is he going cope with the speed his teachers are going to drill p6 at this rate.

Lol... Sound so familiar πŸ˜‰

My son had a fantastic holiday...actually I have kept up his Wii/Xbox controllers but he still has the ipad. He told me he wants to watch show until 3am. Really enjoying himself...never mind, never mind...when school reopens, he will definitely be drilled.
I have reminded him over the last few days of holiday that I will be putting all the \"screen\" in cold storage when school opens. I would think that he will feel the heat when pressure builds up in the class... Let's hope that our DS
will \"wake up\" their idea then;)

Happy new year to you!

Happy New Year everyone :rahrah:

Let's hope our dear sons will wake up to the reality when school reopens. That would be the best gift for 2012.

We also need lots of sanity as well to get thru this whole year of 2012 ahead ..after that we have experience dealing with it for our younger kids.

I was shocked when My DD had 62 for math in SA1 as her results for P4 is 90plus. Quickly get her a tutor for math. Finally she score full marks for CA2 and 97 for SA2. Later I found out from her that she did not understand the school teacher ways of teaching math properly too fast for her and she is those very quite type with no question asked during lesson. The teacher only explain to the student when they raise up they don't understand or else he will just skip questions.

As such I think 1-1 tutor benefit children who are shy to raise question. πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚
Hi Five! I got 62 for math in SA1 P6 too. I used to get 99 for P2 and my mom was like \"WOW.\" when I got 62  but after that I got tutored back to 88 for CA2 πŸ˜“

Anyway, parents who have Dses and DDs taking PSLE in 2012, this might help:

English for PSLE 2011 was slightly easy.
Math for PSLE 2011 was difficult.
Science for PSLE 2011 was slightly difficult
Chinese for PSLE 2011 was easy.
Higher Chinese for PSLE 2011 was easy as well.

So here’s what I predict for PSLE 2012:
English for PSLE 2012 will be slightly difficult.
Math for PSLE 2012 will be easy.
Science for PSLE 2012 will be slightly easy.
Chinese for PSLE 2012 will be difficult.
Higher Chinese for PSLE 2012 will be difficult.

Anyway, yea. Sometimes I don't understand what my school teacher is saying (P3-P6 teacher, who is the same teacher). P1 and P2 teachers I could cope with them. That teacher who taught me for 3 years I just barely understand what she's saying and i learn the rest from my tutor πŸ˜“

ASLMUM:
Hi fellow comrades,

Any suggestions on how to improve Chinese? I think due to poor foundation, my DD is issues recognising the chinese characters and their meanings. Stress!
Hi. This may help:
For Comprehension in Chinese, first you have to read the passage, then read the questions.

Following that, you sort out that which one requires personal opinions and which ones don't.

Those that don't require personal opinions can be directly copied off the passage. Those who cannot, you have to let your DD comprehend themselves.

But this way is effective for me πŸ˜“
