Mummies,

This is my first time bring my ger overseas. We plan to travel to Shanghai in Dec for 8 days. She's only 18mths old by the time. What do i need to bring along and how many clothes I need to wear on her to keep her warm? Food wise, she's now on solid. So should I purchase food jar from SGP or just let her eat the food in Shanghai?

If your girl is not picky about food, SH has wide variety of food from Chinese to Western, restaurant food is generally cleaner to eat that road side's. Bring along enough healthy snacks and FM (if she's on one) can calm her hunger while on the road.


I think it's already quite cold in December, wear thermal underwear and woolen socks, caps. Try borrow winter coats fr frens if possible, kid outgrow it so fast, moreover it's more like 1-time use only. It can get very cold when raining (experienced it in Jan/Feb CNY time)-chk if it rains during that period, bring brolli and raincoats.

If she's light and want to be carried most of the time, bringing a carrier/harness along is a good idea, esp when you are shopping or on uneven road.

This is her 1st time traveling. Be prepared that she gets cranky due to routines and climate differences, do trial runs before gg, or it might make your trip not enjoyable and stressful.

I'm not trying to discourage u fr gg, you know ur child better, pre-amp what she'll behave under certain circumstances and get prepared yourself before the trip can make the trip much more enjoyable.

Hi,

I personally like to stay at Citadines Shanghai Jinqiao. I think the rate is RMB 650 nett. Maybe for 6 days, they will offer you cheaper rates. I've stayed there for my last 4 visits to Shanghai.

Citadines is a service apartment. You can either choose 2 bedroom apartment or 1 bedroom apartment (RMB650 is for 1 bedroom apartment). If your 2 kids are still young, you can consider this. My colleague (at my recommendation) did this with her hubby and 2 daughters (10 and 6 yrs old). It comes with a bedroom with queen size bed and you can request for a sofa bed in the living room that is like twin size (good for 2 kids).

It also comes with a kitchen with utensils, fridge, etc... so you can do some light cooking.

The best part I like is the location. it is 5 mins walk to nanjing bu xing jie (people's square train station). So the raffles city, local tour agents and trains are within walking distance.

For that price, it's quite worth it.

Can anyone pls advise whether its ok to bring my 2 and a half yr old DS to Shanghai in early April.

The last time DH and I went to Beijing last Aug, we didn't bring him it due to pollution, weather etc .... We came back with a v v bad cough with phelgm that lasted for the longest time.

We will be staying in a hotel ard Nan Jing West Road, Huangpu District. Any recommendations for restaurants, sight-seeing etc that are child friendly??

Alamak. Last time I went to Shanghai, we were standing on the side of the Bund looking across the river at Jin Mao Tower where Grand Hyatt is. The clouds were, gasp, yellow!!


I used to go there a lot when I was working, so this is a great nostalgia trip for me, haha. Some random things I remember:

1. Silk Mart (I think this is the name of the place) - can tailor make 旗袍 for you at around $60 inclusive, or anything you wish for hubby and son. They even come to the hotel for fitting. 2 days is all it takes. My tailor was called 胖子, recommended by a friend. Make sure you ask for silk lining and bargain like mad. Shanghai tailoring is amazing like no other place in the world - definitely better than what’s available in Beijing.

2. If you can, arrange for a day tour to 周庄，a very picturesque town by the river that is heavily featured in 吴冠中 paintings. Very beautiful! The whole place looks like a black and white painting.

3. 孙中山 museum. This was his home. Very interesting from a historical perspective.

4. 新天地－ refurbished area with lots of restaurants. There’s one called 新_士 (forgot the middle word). Very good hotpot cum Shanghainese food.

5. M on the Bund Restaurant. This is in the historic Nissin Shipping Building. Although it’s not on a high floor, the view of the Bund is stunning. Food is western, and I DON’T recommend cos it’s only so so. Would you believe, this place is highly rated, but really, not worth it at all. Instead, have dessert there or coffee on the patio to enjoy the view.

6. Of course, walk on the Bund. Very pleasant and always windy.

7. There’s Meilongzhen - it’s a restaurant located in the old Communist Party HQ. Atmosphere is unique but food is so so.

I’ll write some more if more things surface in my brain. Enjoy!!
