Singapore Chinese Girls' Primary
-
Hi GiftedGem,
Welcome to SCGS!
Which class is your girl going to? My dd will be in P4 next year too.
Actually, the standard of the top two classes are preety similar. And for Chinese, the girls go for classes according to their ability for the subject. The Chinese teachers may change around which class the girls go to depending on their grade the previous semester. I think the girls in the higher ability Chinese class cover more topics, just as the girls in a class with faster grasp for Math cover more in Maths. I think English is preety standard for all classes - and the English standard in SCGS is quite high. There is banding after P4, so in P5, the girls are placed in classes that reflect their P4 results. And then they move up to P6 in the same class.
I am happy with teachers in SCGS. -
Hi floyap!
I think that parents are allowed to bring their P1 girls to their class on the first day of school. Then the parents are allowed to wait in the canteen for their girls until recess. Recess for P1 is at 9.40am to 10.10am. Usually, parent volunteers are around to help the P1s familiarise themselves with school.
The students from all levels are encouraged to bring their textbooks for that semester on the first few days of school. The textbooks are then kept in school - either in a basket under their desk or in their lockers - for daily use. The teachers allow the girls to bring home their textbooks for revision before exams. -
Hi Laura02
Thanks very much for the info.
And Happy New Year to all

Hi can anyone tell me what’s this i hear about a 3hr entrance exam for primary one applicants? what’s the format and what’s your views? i personally am against it. 3hrs is ridiculous for a kid so young!
-
Dear eaves,
Perhaps you have heard a malicious roumour. Pri One applicants are NOT subject to a 3 hr entrance exam, or any other form of exam at the start of the school year.
However, applicants who wish to enter SCGS at Pri 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 take an entrance exam.
Would all parents who have heard such fallicious rumours please contact the school directly to get the correct information. -
Eaves,
I believe the standard admission to P1 in SCGS is through the MOE registration phases. If indeed there are admission tests for the elusive few spaces which become available after the MOE registration exercise is over, this is probably a fairer system than allowing some to get in ‘through the back door’. And signing one’s daughter up for the test is optional after all… -
for Pre MOE P1 registration into SCGS around July each year under Phase 1 (siblings scheme) and 2A, 2B and 2C, there is NO admission test. Based on past years balloting history recorded - by end of phase 2C, all P1 vacancies were snapped up hot! thus rendering phase 2C Supplementary invalid. SCGS now fall under Moulmein - Kallang GRC, her boundary redrawn due to 2011 politicians election campaign.
but Post P1 registration, Yes!
in the unfortunate event that your child gets balloted out during phase 2B / 2C MOE registration and once come January brand new year dawn with P1 already kick off started but you still keen to transfer your child in, Yes - get your child mentally prepared, ready to sit for entrance proficiency tests.
the limited vacancies are scarce.
to be fair to many candidates in the Transfer Wait list eager to come in, the school adminster such tests.
dateline to apply to sit for Test: this Wed, 11 Jan 2012, latest by 5 pm.
actual date of Test: this Sat, 14 Jan 2012
costs: $25 admin fee charges
Application form to download, fill in sit for tests.
the form must reach the General Office (Admission), dateline this Wed :-
http://scgs.edu.sg/~pridocs/pdf/Form-AdmissionTest211211.pdf
for P1: 45 mins per paper. (English, Maths, Mother Tongue)
8 am to 11 am (with a break)
for P5: 1 hour per paper (English, Maths, Mother Tongue).
8 am to 12 noon (with a break)
the school said that only when vacancies arise for a particular level, then school will conduct tests. if no vacancy arise, then no test conducted.
rule:
due to limited vacancies, only SG citizens need apply:-
http://www.scgs.edu.sg/content/view/116/25/
shortlisted candidates will be informed to attend an interview.
for candidates who aren't shortlisted - they can try again in future for the next test (subject to vacancies that arise). Look out for announcement update on school website. -
It seems the P1 admission test (post-MOE registration) is not 3 hours long. Each of the 3 subject papers is 45mins long but most girls finish in less than that time. Breaks with snacks are provided between papers.

My daughter sat for the entrance exam a few years back and we did not feel unduly stressed as she already had a confirmed place in another primary school. It does seem to be a fair system.
