You mentioned in your earlier post about reading Chinese books, are there any books that you can recommend for a beginner (my DS does not like Chinese and is not into Chinese books at all).
I would also like to check if you have any idea about canoeing. What is the criteria to join canoeing. How many times do they have to train, and where do they normally go for training? Is it extremely tough?
Thanks in advance.

Hello! Haha just happy to be able to offer what I can..
It's kind of hard to describe the 'level' of Chinese books that your son should read. When he's in his lower secondary levels he isn't expected to read epics such as 三国演义 or 水浒传, but he will have to read those if he enters a certain specialized stream called the Bi-cultural Studies Program (BSP - don't worry about it for now) in Secondary 3.
I would suggest fiction first, if your son didn't read many Chinese books in Primary School, because the primary objective is to improve grammar and syntax. Any book that you can easily get will do. 500 page long theses or autobiographies are certainly out of the question for now..
There is no criteria to join canoeing as long as your son shows an interest in joining. However, if demand for canoeing happens to be very high this year, it really comes down to luck. So I would suggest your son get to know a few seniors (or personally e-mail/talk to the coach) to make his name stand out among all those who sign up.
It is physically tough and occupies a lot of time, especially near competition periods (Mar-Jun), but that can be said of all CCAs. They train at Macritchie reservoir (nearby) or at Kallang, and I think they have trainings twice a week normally, but almost every day near competition periods! Hope this helps! -

Hi yijing1512, :thankyou: so much for sharing with us on your experience in HCI, really appreciated! :salute: Do u know if it is compulsory to do e 西游记 for all sec 1 pupils or is it meant for those who opt for LEP? Will it be tested? I personally find that e 西游记 is too CHEEM for sec 1...No problem, glad to help. And congratulations on your son getting into HCI, must have did extremely well in his PSLE!
