Phimosis / Tight Foreskin / Circumcision

Anyone who has sent their kids for circumcision? My boy 12 has unitary tract infection few wks bk & the GP diagnosed him as having phimosis (tight foreskin). He suggested circumcision. So we went to a polyclinic, same diagnosis & was referred to KK hospital for further evaluation in early Dec. Calling those parents with kids that have gone thru circumcision at KK hospital, pls. share with me yr experience…

1. How long is the surgery? Day surgery right?
2. Was it a laser circumcision?
3. How yr child take the pain, how long is the recovery?
4. What’s the estimated cost?

Lasty, is this a wise choice?

Hi.

My boy went for circumcision for the same reason and I believe circumcision is a wise decision.

The pain he had was so unbearable before the surgery and I have never look back after the surgery.

1. It is a day surgery. Takes about 3 hours.
The surgical procedure is very fast.
Before they put my son under GA, I am allowed to be in the OT and stay by him till he is totally under the influence of GA.
You are then invited to wait at the waiting room. Once he is out, he will be put in the observation room till he wakes up.
After he wakes up, he must be able to urinate before he is allowed to go home.

The whole recovery process takes about 1 week for my son.

Do not worry too much about it as the nurse will give you very good advice.

As for the cost, I cannot remember how much but you are able to use your Medisave.

You may like to check with the hospital on this.

What would be a suitable age for them to do a circumcision? If not for the urinary tract infection, would u have send your DS for such ops? What are the pros & cons of doing this.

There isn't really a suitable age as I know many babies do it too.

If my son doesn't have the infection, I will not have thought of sending him for circumcision.

As for the cons, I am not too sure about that but I know it is definitely more hygenic now for my son.

Thanks kiasimom…agree that its more hygenic. Err u mean "babies" :!: . I still have not got the courage to bring my DS for this although as babies they are less likely to tell what is "pain" after the ops. Maybe they will cry for a week during the recovery process…

They were circumsized when they were about 1-2 mth old. The process was done by our GP and if I’m not mistaken it cost about $200.

Both me and hubby were allowed to watch the whole process. It was very fast and quick. No GA but local A.

Both recovered within 1 week.

It is good to have the circumcision at an early age as they will not experience so much pain.

I chose KK too for ds. All because someone told me that private doctors will inject near the penis to numb the area before the procedure is done. Don't flame me horrr... It's what I have heard. So not sure if there is a thruth in it.


For KK, the draw back is the long wait time. I registered in August 2007, since I wanted it done during school holidays, the earliest time slot available was November. Even then, I needed to choose the very last day of school. The school holidays in month of November had been wipe out too. Left only December.

Another thing, before the procedure was done, the doctor will approach the child. The child will be given an information letter (written in simple English) to ensure that the child agrees and understand that he will be undergoing a circumcision procedure. I think the child will need to sign too.

After the surgery, while our child was recovering from GA, a nurse will approach us and will go through on how to look after the wound. She will show pictures of how the penis will look when it is healing.

Right after the surgery, the wound looks clean. The wound is protected by a transparent plaster, so you can see it is not gory at all.

One more thing. Please do bring along a very loose t-shirt material or cotton pants for your child to put on when going back home. I've seen some kids wearing huge t-shirt with nothing underneath. :lol:

Thanks kaisimom & EN for sharing. EN you registered in Aug meaning that's the 1st consultation & you have to wait abt 3 mths to get the op done? Kaisimom, did you wait so long too? Oh no, my boy's 1st appt is in early Dec & I am hoping for him to get circumcise in Dec before sch reopens. Looks like that's impossible now. Anyone knows of any other hopitals where the waiting time is not so long? :?:

Cotton pants for the child to put on? Won't that hurt. How abt sarong?
