Victoria vs SJI for Secondary

Hi all.
When comparing these two schools, one has no need to compare their academics, since both schools perform quite similarly.
These two schools however differ so much in environment. Many of my friends and colleagues would refer to sji as a totally different brand of schooling, separate from most other local schools, while for VS, they would think it just another secondary school but with better results.
Also, SJI being independent, there seems to be an aura of class permeating from the school, though VS would be more down-to-earth.
There is also the factor of the schools attitude, I heard from one of my colleagues that foreign scholars in VS have to get an L1R5 of 12 or lower in school exams in order to keep their scholarships, while in sji, L1R5 of 25 is enough, according to my colleague, this is because sji treats scholars as part of their family and not just there to pull up their average.
In my experience with dealing with people from other schools, though both are very proud of their secondary schools, the SJI guys seem to be of a family than just a group of friends.
If it was Up to me, I would choose sji, though I already have for my DS.
Nevermind the catholic thing, he will love sji.
just look at the recent news for the school, the old boys have set up a fund to help their former teachers financially. -
most RI students don’t come from humble backgrounds.
SJI and RI have much more in common. One good example is the ability to churn out ministers as well as playing the exclusively SJI against RI soccer match called the Ortega cup.
Each schools also consider eachother a rival in many areas, one example is rugby.
Furthermore, each also have a very westernised and "english" culture. Though this is more prevalent in SJI, where many students would do relatively badly in their mothertongue. -

RI does consider SJI a rival in Rugby, in B divs, the 3rd and 4th spots are always belonging to RI and SJI, ACS(i) and SASS always get the top 2. However, the 3rd and 4th spots are still up for grabs and in recent memory, it was always either RI or SJI.
Both RI and SJI are also independent which means that it would be difficult for poorer families in the lower range of PSLE intakes in these schools (Scholarships and all that).
Citing the recent presidential elections is not much of a strong point, as you can also clearly see just by simply standing outside RI that many of it’s sudents are from well-to-do families. -
For the case of dropping cca’s if you compare from a few years back, the cca’s are all still the same, and new ones are even sprouting up (like football this year)
Furthermore, the case of students being asked to leave the school was heresay at best. I have also heard about this and asked many of my colleagues and even some school teachers, and they said to their memory, this has never happened.
Sji is very protective of its students, they wouldn’t let anyone go like that.
Also, though in RI there are those from humble backgrounds, the majority is not. Majority of the students come from alumni families with well-to-do parents. -
yeah we should just leave it at that. many top schools have many stories like these.
Though, that could just have been an expulsion due to bad grades (which is understandable), but yeah, sensitive issue.
The bottom line is, both VS and SJI are top schools, both have similar merits but have some major differences. Its like Pepsi or Coke, Sprite or 7up. Its now all up to personal preference. -
My son is currently at St. Stephen’s School and obviously, we are keen on getting him at SJI. However, we live in Tanjong Katong/Haig Road area which is far from SJI. Therefore, we’re also looking at VS as an alternative. He got A’s in his SA1 results so we think he will be able to manage the COP of both schools (on a side note - should we also apply him at both school’s IP?).
Anyway, assuming his PSLE scores qualifies him at SJI and VS, which should we choose? In this case, should school location/travel time be a major factor? -
Is the principal from Victoria good? Is he able to motivate the students and teachers? Attended the open house last Sat. His speech did not seem to leave a deep impression for the audience, compared to other open house that we attended.

I think its impt to ask the boy which he prefers too, since his SA1 results are good, why dun you consider applying for DSA(Academic) into SJI too ?My son is currently at St. Stephen's School and obviously, we are keen on getting him at SJI. There are a couple of buses like 966 and 5 which uses PIE from Jalan Toa Payoh that goes to Jalan Eunos in 10 mins. Not sure if that helps. -

He said he prefers SJI. Anyway, we've applied him for DSA (IP) at both schools. If he does not qualify, there's always the PSLE score route.

Will check the bus routes but an SJI teacher said taking bus 48 from Marine Parade at 6:30 AM will bring the student to SJI around 7:15 AM.
